Kisnou - Sancta Mea

This is a live improvised sound meditation based on the sonic journey of water in nature.  In the first stage of this piece we are guided by water down a babbling stream, as we float down we are surrounded by a world of crickets and swirling heavenly organ chords. As the chorus undulates it develops into a full choir of synthesized notes, the low notes ground the listener to the earth and the highs lift you into the celestial ethers.  Drifting deeper, we meet our narrator made of a rose pink brass.  It covers us with deep, comforting long notes and then dances like a forrest nymph before leaving. A light rain storm cues an exit of characters.  The rain crescendos into a steady storm, the water begins to swell with the chords in the sky when the thunder rolls in a full thunder storm on the backs of a minor chord cavalry.  As he rain pummels us and the volume grows, the brass narrator reminds us that we must not hide from our demons , we must face our fears, it is not the true nature of meditation to be entirely peaceful.  Growth happens in times discomfort.  At exactly the moment the storm has finished with us, it is gone.  We are returned to our pastoral peacefulness, floating down a narrow stream.  We end up washed up on the banks, listening to the evening crickets.

I didn’t expect the first experiment to sound any good, so I just laid all bar one of the samples out in sequence (in name order), adjusted its length to 21 minutes and cut it into 3 equal 7-minute tracks. These were laid over each other to play simultaneously. These were duplicated with slight reverb.

I took one short section, which sound a bit like part of a synth arpeggio, and made two longer sequences out of it. The second, towards the end, is downpitched and equalised to sound like an older synth.

The long Montezuma Oropendola clip was stretched to 7 minutes, then ruthlessly reverbed and put through Abstract Chamber to create a dreamy ambient background. This is the only track that sounds different to the source material.

Finally the last 30 seconds of the mix was duplicated, reversed, reverbed and appended to the mix, creating the quirky faded ending.

What amazed me was how logical, structured and ‘composed’ the result sounds. A tribute, I think, to Patricia’s choice and range of sounds.

All done in Audacity using basic effects and plugins.

Step 2: Download the 64 source tracks of the Cellular Chorus at:

Step 3: Create a new piece of music using only the source audio. Use as many of the samples as you’d like, but don’t add other sounds, or process the samples to any extent more than slightly altering the individual material.

Background. Patricia Wolf has said of her original piece: “Cellular Chorus is a work of spatialized aleatoric music using smartphones to bring people physically closer to have an interactive and collective experience with light and sound. The piece is played by each user visiting Cellular Chorus on their smartphones. … The sounds I made are meant to harmonize. There is no right or wrong way to play them. The intention of this piece is to repurpose your smartphone for deep listening, creative experimentation, and to immerse groups of people in a sound and light environment with face to face interactions.”

We are thrilled to announce our latest release, a reissue of the 1987 hidden gem Resonance, by Japanese pianist Yumiko Morioka. Originally released on Akira Ito’s ‘Green & Water’ label Resonance remains her only solo record - a truly stunning, timeless collection of compositions that deserves to find a new audience in 2020. 

Just a little over two years ago, Yumiko was fortunate to escape with her life when a neighbour woke her in the middle of the night to tell her that wildfires were closing in. Thirty minutes later her California home, along with all her musical recordings and equipment, was destroyed.

Now back living in Tokyo, where Resonance was created, she is doing well and is excited that her music is being given a new lease of life. It’s our great fortune that Yumiko, and the music she recorded back in 1987, survived and we’re honoured to be able to share the remastered recordings with the world.

Resonance draws influence from the popular environmental music culture prevalent in Japan during the late 80s, but it’s also heavily inspired by Western musicians like Erik Satie and Brian Eno. Listening today, it still feels fresh and pertinent; like the great pioneers of classical and ambient music, there's a timelessness to Resonance - a comforting, familiar feeling, as if these melodies have always existed.
