Controlled Substance - January 2026

Nearly 2 days of digging through existing collection, artists back catalogs and prepping this to bring a mix of one fully original tune from each artist playing at Balance Croatia 2026.

Decided it had to be fully solo release original tune, not a remix of another artist and it had to instantly smack me as a weapon. Couple of exceptions as they just didn't have any tunes that weren't a colab with someone else...such is!

Some tracks were quickly found, only sifting through a handful of releases before finding something that elicited the instant "OOF" *bass face* response, others took ages of digging!

Struck out on only 1 of the local Croatian DJs (Marko Felinger) who is the very rare exception to the rule that you gotta be a producer as well as an exceptional DJ to "make it" these days...kudos to him!

Where I had/found a solid breaks tune by any artist, I opted for that to keep things interesting, as don't we all love a bit of breakbeat!

Part 1 of what is likely to be 3 parts unless I really get on a roll and smash out like 5 hours next time!

Christian Smith has long operated at the intersection of progressive and techno. As both DJ, producer and label boss of Tronic, his work is defined by precision, propulsion and an instinct for evolution that has kept him at the top of his game for more than two decades.

A constant presence in global clubs and festivals, Smith’s output remains relentless. His productions draws on a deep understanding of dancefloor psychology shaped over years behind the decks. For more than 15 years, Of Norway has been the joint project of Vegard “Lil’ Wolf” Dyvik and Christian Steenstrup. Emerging from Oslo’s fertile underground, the duo have developed a sound that sits somewhere between house, electro, techno and dub, often coloured by darker textures and leftfield influences.

Their productions move comfortably between warm, hypnotic grooves and colder, more atmospheric terrain, drawing on everything from disco and electro to industrial and experimental sounds.

Their most recent release on Last Night On Earth alongside Sentre, encapsulates their sound: fun, care-free dance music that never takes itself too serious. That ability to produce a variegated sound has seen their music picked up by DJs across a wide spectrum, with support from Dixon to Sasha to Timo Maas and more.

On this Balance Selections mix, the duo stay true to form with a playful one-hour session. Featuring tracks from Eden Burns, Mark Henning, Tata Box Inhibitors and more, the mix connects classic and contemporary cuts with an ease that never feels forced.

As a kid from the UK growing up in 1980s Manchester, I was privileged to live through the Factory records era and enjoy the booming music scene as It reshaped the city's image from 'dirty old town' to the global mecca of nightlife and creativity it is today.
While the warehouse and club scene was beginning to bubble away, I spent my early teens listening to mixtapes from the likes of Sasha (who began his career down the road and has curated the soundtrack of my life ever since), the DJs of the Thunderdome and Hippos (Jay and Moggy) and the legendary 808 State Show - at the age of 16 I was invited down to the Sunset studios to play a live  guest mix on the show and was booked to play my first club gig in the city, warming up at Parliament Nightclub.
I spent many years clubbing and DJing around Manchester and the City Centre, developing my DJ style taking influence from the DJs of the Hacienda, Bugged Out and Tangled and became hooked on the Progressive House scene led by Sasha, Digweed, Renaissance, Cream and the Global Underground mix series.
After a summer DJing in Cyprus in 1999, I returned to Manchester and held several residencies in bars and clubs around the City; Dry Bar, Joshua Brooks, South, the wonderful sweatbox where I'd spent my twenties bouncing, Tangled and more recently Soundcontrol.
I've been lucky to DJ with many of my idols such as Nick Warren and Jody Wisternoff, Hybrid, Ashley Casselle.
30+ years on, now living in Cairns, Australia, I'm still hunting new sounds to share with anyone who will listen to this veteran of the bedroom DJ scene.
