Michael Nyman &amp; David McAlmont - Secrets Accustions &amp; Charges - Max Cooper Deconstruction/Reconstruction

I wrote these two remixes as a pair, starting only with two audio files, one orchestral part of all the strings, piano etc, and one vocal part of David McAlmont singing. It wasn't easy to tame the parts into an electronic format that I was happy with, so I opted to cut everything up into tiny segments and reconstruct my own track which ended up really different from the original - my "Deconstruction" mix. Then I was faced with the problem of exactly that, that the remix sounded nothing like the original, so I then tried to reconstruct back to the original from the parts I had made - my "Reconstruction" mix. It was an interesting production exercise I guess, not an easy remix job, but hopefully it yielded something interesting.

And Nick Cobby has amazed me with his video for the tracks, it's really amazing - He invited people to be 3d mapped at his studio, and then cut there digitised face footage perfectly to the segments of audio I used to create the music - you gotta watch it!! &gt;&gt; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=khlLc7NNOok

Max Cooper Live - Movements Through Self Contained Space (free download)

For my new EP on Traum I've done a couple of collaborative tracks with Nicolas Bougaieff (one of the founders of Liine). Nick had some great melodic ideas and a nice operator patch which we used to build two tracks around. This first one, Ellipse, has lots of shuffle and a simple groove to focus attention on the meandering riff at forefront. It's a little different from my usual, a bit of an experiment, hopefully some people will like it!

Continuing with the theme of the Movements EP, this one is about movement through fractured space. We used Nick's great operator patch again (the same one as for Ellipse), and Nick came up with this nice riff. I mainly just made lots of strange noises and worked on the drums, automation, arrangement, details and overall feel, trying to keep it pretty simple and too the point - that is a nice flowing club style with plenty of broken reality moments.

This one has a really straight groove, with all the drums quite quantised to a linear grid, while Ellipse uses some of the same elements with a heavy shuffled groove - you can hear the really different club feel that results in the two tracks.

A mix based on the British Museum
 
Featuring a mix of 12th century Tibetan monks song, one of the first ever recordings of music, made by Thomas Edison on a wax cylinder in 1888, poetic spoken word, 9th century Gregorian Chant, A call to the lama from afar, some unreleased exclusives, 9/8 techno, traditional Chinese music mixed with rude glitch, and a binaural museum.

The brief for this mix was to make something inspired by an architectural space. When I was doing my Post-Doc at UCL I used to go the British Museum to relax, and work in the beautiful library there, so I chose the space for the mix. I wanted to capture the ambient atmosphere in the central courtyard, so I did some binaural recording to include in the mix. I also wanted to make the mix something of an exploration through history and ideas in line with the contents of the museum, so I brought in lots of disparate music spanning the centuries and continents. I also mixed it in a way to be like a journey though the museum, turning corners and regularly coming across something totally different and unexpected, with each track being like a different exhibit. Hence the name of the mix, in that, each piece of music almost has a visual content.

Marcus Graham - Cauldron - 2 hour techno mix

As a kid from the UK growing up in 1980s Manchester, I was privileged to live through the Factory records era and enjoy the booming music scene as It reshaped the city's image from 'dirty old town' to the global mecca of nightlife and creativity it is today.
While the warehouse and club scene was beginning to bubble away, I spent my early teens listening to mixtapes from the likes of Sasha (who began his career down the road and has curated the soundtrack of my life ever since), the DJs of the Thunderdome and Hippos (Jay and Moggy) and the legendary 808 State Show - at the age of 16 I was invited down to the Sunset studios to play a live  guest mix on the show and was booked to play my first club gig in the city, warming up at Parliament Nightclub.
I spent many years clubbing and DJing around Manchester and the City Centre, developing my DJ style taking influence from the DJs of the Hacienda, Bugged Out and Tangled and became hooked on the Progressive House scene led by Sasha, Digweed, Renaissance, Cream and the Global Underground mix series.
After a summer DJing in Cyprus in 1999, I returned to Manchester and held several residencies in bars and clubs around the City; Dry Bar, Joshua Brooks, South, the wonderful sweatbox where I'd spent my twenties bouncing, Tangled and more recently Soundcontrol.
I've been lucky to DJ with many of my idols such as Nick Warren and Jody Wisternoff, Hybrid, Ashley Casselle.
30+ years on, now living in Cairns, Australia, I'm still hunting new sounds to share with anyone who will listen to this veteran of the bedroom DJ scene.
