Formal Party was formed in October 2013, when Brothers Christopher and Aaron Johnston and best friend Josh Burnett stumbled upon something a little bigger than they had first anticipated. Alternative in your face blues rock and deep jingle jangles thrust the boys into an abyss of noise and experimentation. With some deep bass, funky beats, distorted guitars and rough and ready vocals. Formal Party was born.

Christie was brought up in Glasgow in a musical household and as a bairn went from gig to gig with her musician Dad. Her own musical journey began with her playing cello in both classical and baroque orchestras from the age of 9.

Her first band experience was actually as a drummer in Home For A Day… but the less said about that the better.

CCV soon progressed to singing and at the age of 16 began teaching herself guitar as she felt the need to share these emotions and these songs that were beginning to form.

On January 14th 2010 she played her first solo gig, whilst at college studying music and due to high anticipation, appeared in local and national newspapers. Christie continued to write and perform as a solo artist for the next 3 years – everywhere and anywhere, building a following and a fanbase. Notable gigs include opening for Toyah Wilcox, Aussie superstar Jimmy Barnes, Toby Jepson, Steve Conte of New York Dolls, Ricky Warwick, Simon McBride, headling Les Fest, a DF handpicked singer/songwriter showase in King Tut’s and many, many more.

In early 2012, Christie approached producer roddymacaudio in order to record two live demo tracks and in March, the in-studio video of her performing ‘All I Can Do’ went viral, reaching thousands of views in a mere few weeks. CCV has continued working alongside roddymacaudio, recording anything and everything she had. Together, they wrote some shiny new parts...and that’s when a band was born! In 2013, with Roddy now on guitar duties too, they were joined by Mike Jackson on drums, Stephen Lightbody on keyboards and Craig Rae on bass. In September 2013 they played their first show alongside the mighty Afterlife which was a success beyond their wildest imaginations. They continued to rehearse in-studio and in December 2013 recorded their debut EP which was released at their sold-out headline show on February 28th 2014 at the Classic Grand, Glasgow. 

Christie is now, however, producing herself (all on good terms with the boys - honest!) and will release her first solo EP in Spring of 2015. 

Now, working on a much more intimate level; keeping recordings homely & folky, with the songwriting compromised, things are beginning to sparkle...

Penguins Kill Polar Bears return with their debut album Building Homes From Broken Bones, out 7th April 2014. The album is the follow-up to their 2011 EP Sapling, which raised rock hairs and post-rock eyebrows from the likes of The Line of Best Fit to Rock Sound, This Is Fake DIY to Clash Magazine and everyone in between.
