To this date, Hamlet Gonashvili is still considered the “voice of Georgia”. He was an outstanding soloist, influential teacher and brilliant performer of traditional Georgian music. Born in the Eastern part of the country, Hamlet was known to be the best interpreter of songs from the regions of Kartli and Kakheti although he did not have any formal music education. He played an important role in the world-famous Rustavi choir, the first choir in Georgia to include into its program songs from all regions of the country. When Sergei Prokofiev heard the songs of the Georgian choir for the first time, he could not believe the fact that this was folk rather than original music work. On the on hand, Gonashvili's work is closely related to folklore, and on the other hand, it is a kind of synthesis of the aesthetic ideals of classical music of Georgian and Western European music. His songs are becoming more and more popular abroad - foreigners use Hamlet Gonashvili's "Urmuli" and "Orovela" for films and mass scenes as a mystical event, in other words as a unique expression of the ability of human voice. Hamlet Gonashvili’s huge diapason and impeccable singing ability in combination with his marvelous timbre was usually “leaving the audience hypnotized”. At the height of his creative powers, Hamlet died in a tragic accident in 1985 falling off a tree while picking apples. He had been awarded his country’s most important honors and prizes.

Curated by Tiko Gogoberize, aka TINA, Holy Oscillation is a monthly radio show focusing on experimental electroacoustic music and the influence of 20th-century classical composers. The show features musicians from different backgrounds, live performances, and guest music theorists. It provides young musicians and composers a space to collaborate, experiment, and share their work.

  Tamriko Kordzaia had already made a name for herself as a Haydn and Mozart interpreter in her native Georgia. After moving to Switzerland, she continued this work, but increasingly focused on New Music. She has received numerous national and international awards, including first prize and the prize for Mozart interpretation at the Sakai International Competition in Japan. From 2008 to 2023 she was a member of the Mondrian Ensemble, with which she received the Swiss Music Prize in 2018. In addition to working with other instrumentalists, it is above all the often very close collaboration with composers that nourishes her interest in contemporary music. Among many others, important and enriching encounters have been those with Dieter Ammann, Klaus Lang, Alvin Lucier, Felix Profos and Jannik Giger. Her involvement with contemporary music extends far beyond the field of new music, and she also works with musicians from electronic club music, experimental music and jazz-related contexts. She also seeks connections to other artistic disciplines and fields. Her latest formation, Ensemble KIOSK (2021), creates eclectic concert forms with scenographic elements. Tamriko Kordzaia’s repertoire consists of a huge range of solo and duo works, chamber music, world premieres, improvisation and original compositions.

Border lines

This tone poem is based on a play collaboration with a crow where we each took turns to create stone arrangements. The stone play arrangements are the basis for the score to which crow calls and theremin responses are performed. Each crow and theremin phrase is processed through custom built software that has algorithmic qualities associated with the material and sonic characteristics of the three types of stones used in the collaborative play—granite, marble and sandstone.
