Untitled is a radio piece utilizing simple, everyday recordings, moments that come close to being music mixed with short bits of text and quotations. We’re thinking about places, how we get to a place, how we use them, how we take things from them and how we move spaces themselves just by being inside of them. We’re thinking about how inside of those places, even once you get comfortable with them and they can begin to look familiar, they are always unstable and will eventually collapse. We’re thinking about how change and malleability are signs of strength and resilience. Can we trace the changes that mark objects? Asking this question and many more, we send recordings through objects and re-record their sounds resonating through different materials. Prompting the listener to try and hold onto the resonance from the room and hear it in distinction from other spaces we send the same sound through. The piece is then made from originals and copies, presentations and re-presentations, but there isn’t quite repetition. The text barrels forwards despite being sent through a metal basin instead of air. The sounds continue to move and change their shapes depending on the container that holds them. Despite all of the motion and inconsistency in the environment, the piece is held together by a recording made in M’s house. Dishes clank in the kitchen, the windows open and close, trains go by, and all of these mundane sounds occasionally interlace with music on a stereo and an electric organ. So, while the listener is centered by this wide, stereo recording taken inside of a single room, the space still feels uncertain, and unstable. This instability is a hopeful nod towards the listener to become curious about the supposedly recognizable aspects of what they are hearing. To make the extremely familiar sounds a bit less close, and a bit further outside of one’s everyday experience.

White note is a live audiovisual experiment that uses footage from a documentary aiming to introduce Nudem Durak. A Kurdish female singer who was arrested sentenced to 15 years in prison by Turkish government in 2015 for promoting the Kurdish culture. This documentary was made right before her imprisonment and the subtitles are an explanation for international viewers. Despite expectations, all the human right campaigns failed to get Nudem out of prison and so voice was omitted. In 2018, a young Iranian female singer covered the same song. Her activities are unofficial and underground since basically singing as a solo female voice is forbidden in Iran. Through this direct, independent and personal empathic work she retold Nudem’s narrative after all the fuss of freedom campaigns were over. A singing which is imprisoned itself in a larger space has become the voice of another imprisoned tone.

White Note

When we remember our past we often recall it through visual means - who was there, where we were, what we were wearing. This ongoing archival project asks people to recall a memory through aural means by asking them to remember a sound.

The sample presented here are from the Sound Memory Archive which consists of tape cassettes with recorded memories on them. The tapes represent a physical recollection of the person’s non-physical, immaterial memory.

Beyond thrilled to present Zach Hart's contribution to the CRUDE mix series.  A NYC based film maker, field recording maestro, and sci-fi lover, Hart gave us potentially the "quietest" mix yet full of minimal experimental electronics paired with eerie vocals.  Deep and strange tunes that drop you into a calm dreamy place.  And then he flips the script in the 4th act with a mix within a mix of strictly sophisticated bangers.  Get out the hi-fi system to let the stereo electronic transmissions wash over you.

CRUDE Mix 008 - Zach Hart

I’m a pianist, improviser, performer and soundartist, keen on body, gender and transdisciplinarities. I experiment objects inside  and outside the piano and explore corporealities via eutony. I’m interested in weaving sonic relations in space, installations, expanded sonic bodies, free improvisation, dance, voice. I’m part of Sonora – músicas e feminismos network, NuSom – Research Centre on Sonology of University of São Paulo and Orquestra Errante – free improvisation group.
Sou pianista, improvisadora, performer e artista sonora, atraída por corpo, gênero e transdisciplinaridades. Experimento objetos dentro e fora do piano e exploro corporalidades via eutonia. Interesso-me por tecer relações sonoras no espaço, instalações, corpos sonoros expandidos, improvisação livre, dança e feminismo.
