Maric Set one's sights on High >>> insclife

Forecast was commissioned in 2020 by the incredible young percussionist Elliott Gaston-Ross. He had performed some music of mine in a BBC young musician of the year final about seven years earlier.

Written in the depths of the pandemic, this piece is in two parts. 

Part 1 is for solo marimba with wooden planks and Part 2 (https://on.soundcloud.com/r4jC6 )for solo vibraphone with cymbals/gongs. Accompanying Elliott are edited lo-fi audio recordings taken from trail camera footage I had placed around the rewilding wetland areas of Bamff Wildland in Perthshire, Scotland (http://bamff.land/). They include the mostly nocturnal sounds of beavers, jackdaws, barn owls and other birds - plus the sound of water and the rustling of creatures through vegetation. Occasionally humans congregate near the cameras (usually for nature tours) and their voices can be vaguely heard. On one occasion my daughter Flora (barely 1 year old at the time) can be heard singing to herself.

The second part uses recordings I made of local wind turbines - both on Bamff and further north into the huge wind farm at Drumderg. Using a Lom Geofon microphone (based on seismic measuring devices)plus some contact mics, the mechanisms and hidden internal roar of these giant sentinels form the backdrop to the solo vibraphone - some synth pitches are gradually added to this, mostly to enhance the existing harmonics in the soundscape.

Forecast is somewhat like a dream unfolding into reality; these landscapes are/were my day to day lived experience. The positive impacts of rewilding are tangible, as is the joy in experiencing these sometimes playful creatures in often intimate circumstances, but the pandemic introduced a new and darker dreamlike layer, where it felt that our imminent future was being foretold whilst directly morphing into the present. When it felt that time had already run out.

Dave Maric is a British composer and performer of acoustic and electronic music who has created numerous works for the concert hall, stage and film. He has regularly worked with classical musicians, jazz musicians, experimental electronics, free improvisers, folk musicians, art-rock musicians, singer-songwriters, poets, visual/performance artists, choreographers, animators and film makers, and has also curated numerous events featuring stylistically varied music - often in conjunction with other artistic disciplines.

Maric's long term interest in the natural world and the biodiversity crisis has been a key feature in his output and since late 2018 he has relocated to rural Scotland to live at the heart of a long established and ever-evolving rewilding project. Here he continually develops mixed media works and collaborations with predominantly scottish based artists, musicians and environmentalists.
