While Mar io’s recent Twilight of Ages EP was fully committed to the sound of the 90s heyday of athmospheric ambient with very distant reverberations of rave escapism at most, the seven new ToA remixes of his new EP take a much more direct route into the club. The word “remix” falls short here, however, as the EP is more of a spin-off that draws inspiration from various ToA tracks and creates entirely new pieces of art from them. While the mood on all tracks picks up the ambient atmosphere of the source material, the ubiquitous straight bass drum adds a certain urge to hit the dancefloor. This is especially evident on Cie’s marching contribution (A Part of Future & Space) or modul808’s very oldschool ToA interpretation, which puts itself into the tradition of classic 90s deep house. IO label owner Lindsay Wang aka Polygonia, Dan Watts from Bristol aka Fractal Architect and the Rhinelander Harada, who is otherwise known from Trapez, Traum or Paso, also take up the warm deepness of the source material, but drift into subtly trancy dancefloor realms. Marie Wilhelmine Anders/MWA manages to cross uptempo beats with piano dabs and a lot of athmosphere into an ambient dancefloor hybrid. Finally, Mar io himself closes the EP with a contribution that naturally is the one that is most strongly grounded in the Space Night-esque sound of the original and makes us already longing for his next EP.

My entry for The Allegorist-Desired Changes-Remix Competition on Metapop 2021. Since Metapop is closing end of April 2023, I upload my remix here.

My text on Metapop:
"It was a lot of fun. Thank you very much for your great tracks and this great opportunity, Anna! 
It quickly became clear to me what it was going to be: picking up on the groove part of the second part with the aim of making it really take off.
To start with, I took 2 tones from the "weird vocals", built a loop out of them and sometimes added additional harmony tones. I proceeded in a similar way with the noise track: removed a small part, looped and sidechained against the kick so that it breathes and pulsates. Conga track also taken a little and transformed into a new loop.
For the bass I took over the four-note descending bass line, stretched it twice and added a secondary note to the last note. The rest was done by itself: the phenomenal vocals (3voices) float above my straight beat at 130 bpm. The I added in-house acid line, own lead sounds, a small ascending piano motif - that's about it :)"

Join JOIX for a free listening party to celebrate "Der Krieg soll enden" (eng: "The war should stop") EP. Come along to listen to the music with the artist and chat about the making of the EP.
It was very early in the morning when JOIX awaked from a dream where the following german words came to his mind together with some unwritten song structures: "Der Krieg soll enden und das möglichst bald. Für den Frieden und dessen Erhalt." (eng: "The war should end as soon as possible. For peace and its preservation.").
It seemed very important at this moment, so he immediately stood up and noticed these two sentences on a piece of paper in his studio. After going to bed again and waking up later, reading these words once more with a rational mind he was not so convinced of its meaning any more and doubts came up if it would be really a good idea to use this for the next music production. At daylight and with sober mind it seems a bit childish and naive.
But finally the power of the dream was stronger and so you can listen here to the result as first track of this EP "Der Krieg soll enden".
Second track "Born after sunset" is a floating Deep Techno track with hypnotic basses and layered melodic chords which culminate in an emotional break and a deep melodic second part of this track.
Third, "Spinnrad am Brunnenrand" (eng: "Spinning wheel at well edge") is an innuendo to the fairy tale "Frau Holle" and comes up with an enraptured atmosphere which lets you fall down to another world at the wells ground.
4th, the Remix of "Spinnrad am Brunnenrand" by new upcoming Deep Techno Producer Felix Kowalski from Heidelberg rounds off this EP with a nice interpretation of the Original.

Bio:
EMESH led by Antonio Muñoz is a master of creative music production across electronic, ambient, slow trance, dub and IDM genres. He comes from the beautiful region of La Alcarria in Spain. Since 2013 on Sendero Records, he has been delivering a quite diverse range of sound to the listener, sometimes danceable, sometimes calming, more metallic, more organic, and always inspiring. Antonio is both, a musician and therapist. His musical influences owe much to the pop and electronics of the 80s when he started working as resident Dj at Deadly club in Brihuega (Guadalajara-Spain) about 9 years. From there he went to Madrid to do Dj sets with his aka Dujay in various popular nightspots of the capital like the Circulo de Bellas Artes, Mondo and Maxime between others, in addition in the early 2000s he is the founder of the underground parties Darkbeat, programming deep trance and progressive house, pioneers in the city. Working with these sounds allowed him to warm up James Holden the first time he visited Spain in 2003. Evolving his skills, he delved into music production, mastering various instruments and exploring sound therapy rooted in shamanic practices. Antonio gives regular sound therapy sessions and concerts using his Tibetan Singing Bowls, Shamanic Drum and other ancient instruments. His talent has been recognized on a global stage, with his track featured at the London Music Conference in 2020 playing a set at fabric@london. This global recognition is a testament to his skill and creativity. Currently, he's immersed in his studio, Elul, recently completing an indie electronic EP with Miss Zagato, and recent releases on Piranha Siberia Dub, Blue Lotus and Something Spæcial label. There’s a moment at the very beginning of Frolojaz where the track seems unsure whether to reveal itself or remain in reflection. The rhythm stutters gently, as if sound were testing its own balance – not yet settled into groove, but circling it with curiosity.
Organic percussion – tactile, earthy, full of breath and hand – opens the space with a kind of living pulse. A soft yet weighted kick joins, not in insistence but in calm invitation. It doesn’t impose. It suggests.
Then come the strings – quartal, echo-drenched, gently disintegrating across vast imagined halls. They hover, not so much leading the track as dissolving into it. There is no urgency here. Just atmosphere, tone, and time – stretched.
Gradually, without fanfare, the structure coalesces. The four-on-the-floor returns, unobtrusive and patient. A vocal sample loops into earshot – filtered, cycling, shimmering. There’s a sense of French house here, but blurred at the edges. Less homage, more daydream. Labels like Kompakt, All Day I Dream, Sol Selectas or Do Not Sit On The Furniture might come to mind – aesthetics that favor tone over tempo, and repetition as revelation.
Then the tension shifts. A bassline sneaks in – playful, thick, warm. The groove fattens. Just before the break, the drums recede, as if stepping aside. The vocal remains, now fully exposed, soft-spoken yet commanding. A snare build begins – understated, but full of intention.
And when it returns, the track opens wide.
The second movement feels sunlit. Chords rise – smooth, cool, summery. The bass grows bolder, but never brash. This is house music, clearly – but refracted through warmth, ease, and texture. It's not about climax. It's about continuation. A horizon stretched out in rhythm.
Frolojaz doesn’t chase energy – it reveals it slowly. There’s a subtle lineage here, to labels like Lump Records, or Innervisions – imprints that understand dance music as architecture, as emotion in form. But Frolojaz keeps its own posture: steady, self-contained, and quietly generous.
It doesn’t demand to be heard. It waits – and for those who do, it rewards in depth, not volume.

MARIE WILHELMINE ANDERS is a wanderer in music. Musically and instrumentally trained since her earliest childhood, she received her first technical training as a sound engineer at GDR television. She played keyboards in a punk band in the East Berlin underground music scene, created field recordings and sound installations, studied classical composition at the University Of The Arts Berlin, and graduated as a music teacher at the Musikhochschule Stuttgart. In Stuttgart she was an active part of the experimental improvisational scene playing piano as well as a set of electronics. There she founded two ensembles, "Unterton" and "Hammerhaus", both of which brought together groove and free-flowing improvised forms from different perspectives. Additionally, she initiated and directed “momentmusik"—a concert series for experimental and improvised music, visual arts, performance and spoken word, which established the connection between her ensembles and the national and international scenes. 

In 2005 she ended her concert activity and moved back to Berlin. Eager for new forms of expression, Marie learned to play the electric bass, and began producing her music using DAWs and publishing it under the pseudonym Marie Wilhelmine Anders.

Marie's conceptual thinking and her craft as a modern classical composer allow her to congenially translate non-musical concepts into a modern electronic language, influenced by techno, electronica, ambient music and drum & bass. Between 2018 and 2023 she released 6 albums, 2 EP’s, over 10 remixes and more than 20 mixes. As a producer, Marie likes to work alone and independently. She is also increasingly in demand as a remixer.

Her best friend writes: "Marie works her way out of all restrictions and experiments with styles and musical directions.Thereby she adapts formal means and creates something very much her own out of it. As always, I am impressed by her accuracy in everything she does. Marie is the secret Phoenix among my friends, who every time after it has turned to ashes, puts on a new and even more splendid plumage. I have great admiration for her consistency, uncompromising artistry, unconditional honesty, absolute fidelity and loyalty. One speaks of the Phoenix as an eternally youthful bird. And he can fly.”
