Hush Hush is honored to help present Pratunam, a collaborative release between Nick Sheppard and Marigold Sun.

Bristol, UK-born musician Nick Sheppard is the former guitarist of influential punk band The Cortinas and former lead guitarist for legendary group The Clash. Now residing in Perth, Western Australia, Nick continues to thrive in music, playing in several bands and DJing at Perth’s underground venues.

Marigold Sun is the alias of NYC-based Singaporean-Australian musician Eric Li Harrison, a Hush Hush alum who unveiled his debut solo album Swimming in summer 2021. Supported by crews such as Ninja Tune, RVNG Intl., and Mood Hut, the 10-track record served as an introduction to his warm, blissful, piano-soaked instrumental music that explores a cinematic intersection between neo-classical, jazz, ambient, and downtempo styles.

Nick and Eric’s collaboration began as an experiment in quarantine composition as the two embraced a 12-hour time difference between their respective homes to discover a common sonic language that resonated with both artists. Well-known for his role in explosive punk rock bands throughout his storied career, Nick leaned into Marigold Sun’s serene compositions to create calming yet lyrical guitar lines that marks his most restrained material to date.

The result is Pratunam, a dreamy post-rock record full of breezy guitar improvisations and lush Balearic-tinted beats. Named after a colorful neighborhood and marketplace in Bangkok, the EP is rooted in the fond memories the two musicians experienced while visiting Thailand in 2019, just prior to the global COVID-19 lockdown. Although working remotely, the camaraderie between the two musicians is palpable and effortless, their instrumental talents gelling in sublime fashion.

Existing in a timeless realm that reveals shades of Gaussian Curve, The Durutti Column, and Steve Hiett’s cult classic Down On The Road By The Beach, Pratunam finds two talented musicians from different generations and distinctive backgrounds joining forces to create beautiful, expressive, hypnotic music.

World Canvas Mix 23 comes from innerinnerlife (Tomasz Szpaderski) whose delicate and tender ambient compositions have been featured on Portuguese labels Eastern Nurseries and surf. On his 2021 EP ‘R U OK?’ innerinnerlife weaved together luscious avant-pop structures which are as well present on his mix for World Canvas. Recently Szpaderski has been producing plenty of new unreleased music, some of which is premiered on the guestmix at hand.

Khotin has been a key figure in the developing Electronic music scene emerging from Canada - for over ten years he has been producing and releasing music.

His sound has evolved exponentially, weaving between sounds and styles with cohesive ease of which others might only dream of. His records have found a home somewhere between the heady 90's ambient and trip hop era, deep house and has drawn upon abstract influences from balearic roots, trance and a whirlwind of other other cultural guises.

All of this makes his music remarkably interesting and hard to pin down.

His forthcoming album "Release Spirit" is forthcoming on acclaimed label Ghostly International. It features a collection of ambient soundscapes, tape recordings and off piste samples as Khotin draws inspiration from far reaching influences such as World of Warcraft, train journeys through Europe and Japan, family vacations and beyond.

We asked Khotin to record a mix which reflects a similar nature of the new album - the result is a delicate assortment of textures which lend themselves to a brooding optimism for the year ahead. At least we hope..

Very happy to feature a special mix by @patriciawolf_music for the 20th Mirror Tapes podcast.

"In the past couple of weeks I have watched a few films by Éric Rohmer. First I watched Boyfriends and Girlfriends, then The Aviator’s Wife, and most recently Four Adventures of Reinette and Mirabelle. These three films were made between 1981 and 1987 and stylistically feel very much like a product of their time, but also timeless in the sense of how humans navigate relationships. Through these films and many of his others, Rohmer continues the ancient tradition of telling moral tales and having proverbs play out in clever and comedic ways. I loved every moment of these films and can’t wait to dive deeper into his work. These films left an impression on me and in the days after I craved music that gave me the feeling of being in his film environments. This mix includes music that holds some of the same magic and energy for me. One interesting fact about the films of Rohmer is that he seldom includes extradiegetic music. He views the inclusion of off screen music as a violation of the fourth wall. While I do love soundtracks in films I respect and appreciate his perspective on this. His focus on dialogue and the ambient sounds of the locations is more than enough, but in the aftermath made me want to linger in music of a seemingly similar time and emotion. With this mix, I daydream a bit more about his films."
