When Hell Yeah boss Marco dropped Fabrizio Mammarella’s Ambient Remix of Gallo’s ‘Faron’ at sunset at Hostal la Torre in Ibiza last year, people started queuing up for IDs. Well now that remix is at the heart of an EP filled with new tunes by Gallo.

Gallo is a Berlin based Italian who is a key part of the nu-Balearic movement. He makes, plays and loves uplifting music that is loveably epic and emotional. He’s recently remixed Chris Coco, is part of the Balearic Gabba Sound System, resident at horizontal party Buena onda in Berlin and Ibiza and co-hosts his own radio show, My Way. He also has a new 12" EP on Slow Motion (Orange Stripe) coming soon, so is very much on the rise. 

In original form, ‘Remember to Forget’ is a perfectly laid back and languid groove peppered with gentle toms, bass twangs and romantic chords. Distant keys sound like sun beating down on the water and the whole thing blisses you out in no time. 

First to remix are UK trio Clandestino. They flip it into something more upbeat and tropical, with rolling bass and brilliant drum work. Whispered vocals melt into the mix and soothing xylophone patterns finish it in heart swelling style. 

Fabrizio Mammarella’s Ambient Mix is a heavenly rework with expansive chords floating past like cotton wool clouds in the sky. Celestial keys help the whole thing glow with a sense of new age dreaminess and it’s easy to see why this one makes such an impact at open air Balearic dances. 

Gallo then offers Ebrezza, a spacious and loose soup of percussion, thoughtful keys and distant kicks that are barely there. It’s archetypal balearic ambient music that will slow down even the busiest minds. 

Last of all, 1986 is another super slow motion bit of bliss with sunset synths swirling about like a zephyr. As it plays out you can almost feel the sand between your toes and the rays of the fading sun on your face. Perfect stuff.

Recorded in predawn light by a swamp in Ulu Muda's rainforest. In the latter part of this sample you can hear the unusual calls of Rough-sided Frogs (Pulchrana glandulosa). Agile Gibbons can be heard singing in the background along with the occasional chattering calls of Banded Langur.

Andreas Tilliander released his first album as Mokira at the very turn of the Millennium on almighty Raster Noton. 11 years later, the latest Mokira album Time Axis Manipulation was issued on Ulf Erikssons Kontra-Musik and now it’s time to pick up where we left off with ‘Chill Out’. There’s an air of happy retrospect and light solemnity surrounding the new album – enhanced by the fact that it marks Kontra-Musik’s 50th release. With ‘Chill Out’, Mokira attempts to bring back the dreamlike state from those magical late nights of his youth spent in front of MTV’s Chill Out Zone; to go back to his ambient roots using contemporary techniques and perspectives. The result? Well, imagine Lee Scratch Perry and KLF enjoying an episode of Stranger Things on a crappy vintage TV after being hard at work burying old tape recordings in Perry’s tropical garden. Imagine them sitting together totally at peace in a big, cosy sofa while a heavy haze is building up in the room, pleasantly affecting the eerie images on the screen. We always knew Kontra-Musik’s 50th release had to be something quite out of the ordinary. As expected, Mokira didn’t disappoint us one bit.

The vinyl LP is accompanied with a download code for a mixed version of the album, containing almost double the amount of tracks. The mixed version makes it easy for the Chill Out listener to just sit back and let go of reality for a while, just like Mokira did 25 years ago in front of his old TV.

Slowly filling the room like a billowing miasma, Experimedia is pleased to present ‘Dislocations’ – an ambitious set of new compositions from the London-based French drone auteur Pascal Savy. These are the artist’s first proper recordings to come to light since the release of ‘Adrift’ via Eilean Rec. in 2014; but while ‘Dislocations’ seems to share a similar aesthetic to that album at first glance, Savy has fallen ever further down the rabbit hole in the intervening years. 

Whereas our last offering – Matthias Urban’s ‘Passagen’ – focused on the expressive potentialities presented through rigorous discipline and process, ‘Dislocations’ explores a more reactive and emotionally charged terrain. 

Heavily influenced by the writings of Mark Fisher – specifically those found in ‘Ghosts of My Life,’ wherein Fisher lays out his notion of “the slow cancellation of the future” – the production of ‘Dislocations’ began as a pessimistic reflection on the subtle violence and disembodied forces of what Fisher terms “capitalist realism.” Over time, the project would evolve to become more intimate in scope, providing a lens through which Savy could begin to deconstruct and integrate his own feelings of personal dislocation. Ultimately, however, ‘Dislocations’ would become the means through which he would find himself reconnecting with his art, his community, and sense of hope for the future. 

What the listener receives from this process is a set of incredibly evocative recordings that occupies a rarefied space in the hinterland that falls between ambient, drone, and noise aesthetics. At times sounding like a recovered archive of lost transmissions from the front lines of late-period capitalism’s collapse, ‘Dislocations’ exists as a shifting mass of knotted low-end, grayscale reverberations, and pale shades of melody.

When I first started Djing I use to spend all night playing at the club and then very often I would head on out after the nights work and hit another club where I could listen to other DJs do their thing. Many clubs from Shelly's, Entropy, Bakers, Ministry, wobble all use to be regular haunts for me and my friends and when the night was over we all use to head on over to either a friend’s house or to my house for a bit of a chillout session. Back then I use to play some chillout tunes in an afterhours session. Smooth soul, laidback jazz and triphop with a sprinkling of leftfield, every now and again.

Well, even to this day, I still play those tunes daily which helps to bring a calming vibe in my house and in my life especially when I get a bit stressed out and need to chillout.

"Chilled Music is something that I first found back in the late 1980's and to be truthful it has never left my side since then".

A short while back I started expanding my music collection particularly in this vein and in doing so I came across what can only be called Chillhop. I then found A Label that is called Chillhop Records from there I followed the roots of the music and not only expanded the music I own, But I also expanded my mind into a new selection of quality artists that I had up until recently not known. I’ve been listening to their sounds for a couple of years now. In their albums and in their releases, they have introduced me to some truly amazing producers as well as some fantastic tunes.

Here in the 2nd mix from my Chillhop Sessions Collection is a few more of my favorite Tunes.
