I needed to get some demos done for my new solo website, but didn't have the a) time or b) money to go into a paid recording studio to do it.  So decided to do it myself.  So I downloaded some free mixing and recording software and had a go.  I didn't have any special tools at all, but after hearing the result, I think I may need to buy a pop shield!  But I think this isn't too bad, since I haven't had any time (learning curve) learning the software or bought anything special for it.  I just used my regular mic (EV female voccal mic).  MixPad did the business with the mixing.  I think I'll get better the more I use it.  I'll defo be buying the software in 2 weeks time when the free period is up.
