It was great fun to work with Caela Bailey on her album, "The Gospel of the Gutter Queen," featuring many songs written by her dad, my bandmate, Ron W. Bailey.  This is one of my favorites, a true story rendered in song!

Helen Taylor was the real thing.  I had the pleasure of knowing her as a young musician in Nebraska, and playing music with her and other members of her band, the Taylor Sisters.  They were regularly featured at the Golden Nugget in Las Vegas, and Helen was on her way to stardom when she tragically died in 1976, far too young.  I will never forget her clear, haunting voice, and her fine lead guitar playing.   Thanks to Bill Wetterer for these songs!

Will Peoples and I were hanging out at Bad Animals studio downtown, with (as I recall) Les Merrihew on drums and Dave Conant on guitar when Dave Stewart burst into the room, fresh from a show at Bumbershoot, and he jumped on the grand piano, yelling "I'm ready to BOOGIE!"  This is what happened next!

The Shape I'm In

Midwest band "Cotton," an outgrowth of the Liberation Blues Band, driven by the incredible powerhouse drumming of the late Dave Trupp, give Little Richard's classic tune a real workout!  Featuring Jim "Cid" Cidlik on B3 and vocals, and George Bryan on guitar.  I sat in with these guys from time to time (as here), but they took off for Colorado and I stayed in Nebraska with another band.

An unused track from sessions for the Criminal Records album "Live at the Jolly Roger Roadhouse" (still available as an Mp3 download from Amazon.com).  At over seven minutes, this track was deemed too long for the album, but it was the best song of the evening by far. I started playing with Tom shortly after moving to Seattle in 1973; five nights a week at the Boulder Cafe in the Pike Place Market - an education in the blues. Tom was a truly great singer, guitarist, and songwriter. The best of his original songs stand up with the best blues songs ever written, including this one.  Blues for Our Time uncoils in its own leisurely time, becoming this Army vet's  stirring condemnation of a world and a lifetime of WAR - which continues today after his death.  This song tells you what kind of man Tom McFarland was.  Personnel here is Tom McFarland, guitar and vocal; Perry Welsh, harmonica; J.W. Moore, drums; Mark Dalton, bass.

The late Isaac Scott began his musical career in the church, and, like Elvis Presley, gospel music remained a strong foundation for his music throughout his life.  Here's an original "secular gospel song" from the unreleased album we cut in 1977.  Unusual for Isaac, he only sang on this tune, leaving the guitar and beautiful solo to Robin Kutz. The basement of 2010 F street in Lincoln, Nebraska was the scene of much music back in the 60's.  Proprietor Ron Jahde had an amazing stereo in the basement with a pair of Botec speakers that would blow your socks off.  He used to put on the 1812 Overture (with the cannon fire) to show them off... Boom!  We had some fabulous jams there, and Rick Evans (of the Eccentrics and Zager and Evans) had a room upstairs where he was writing songs - many songs.  Here's a jam that featured Mark (first) and Rick (second) taking lead guitar breaks, with Ken Rose on bass and Dave Trupp (pictured) thundering on the drums like nobody else could in those days.  Only other musicians got to hear Rick Evans play this kind of scorching lead guitar through an amp he modified himself - a whole different thing than the folksy persona he'd adopted as part of Zager and Evans!

Our band, "Guitar Slim," played all over the PNW for a dozen years through the 1990s into the early 2000s, including all the major festivals in the area, with two CDs released in that time.  Personnel included Pat of guitar and vocals, Dennis Ellis on sax and vocals, Mark Dalton on bass, and Joe Guzman here on drums.
