In July 2010, I got an invitation to play at a small but neat festival named Folk Ibiza. It was my first visit to the island. I got to spin at a bunch of different locations, such as the Hostal Boutique Salinas, Sunset Ashram, and on the terrace at Space. I returned in September of the following year to play a set on Andy Wilson's show on Ibiza Sonica and a second time at the Hostal. I have not been back to Ibiza since. I recently came across this picture (taken at Cala Compte next to Sunset Ashram), which inspired me to make this mix. I tried to sonically capture the vibe that I felt back then. It includes some bona fide classics such as Ashra "Oasis“, Santana "Aqua Marine," and Jah Wobble & Holger Czukay "Hold On To Your Dreams," as well as tunes by Smith & Mudd, Begin, Quiet Village and more. We’re kicking off SPCEDUST Selections 2025 with Mix #33 from Ireland’s very own Ricky Chong, a selector who’s as sharp as his records are deep. Hailing from Sligo—a town that’s as rich in culture as it is ruggedly beautiful—Ricky grew up knee-deep in his dad’s funk, jazz, and soul crates. That early influence lit a spark that turned into a vinyl obsession, shaping his sound into something truly special.

Ricky’s not here to tick genre boxes—he’s here for the ride!. Whether it’s rare disco burners, African boogie treasures, or the pulse of 90s house, his sets are all about blending the unexpected with the familiar, creating a connection that keeps the dance-floor moving & grooving.

After cutting his teeth with Sligo’s Faint crew, Ricky’s quickly become a name to watch. His encyclopedic knowledge of 20th-century music, combined with his fearless approach to mixing, has earned him gigs alongside the likes of Jeremy Underground. Next up, you’ll find him in Dublin on Feb 1st at the Disco All Dayer, sharing the stage with heavyweights like Joe Claussell and the Idjut Boys. Oh, and don’t sleep on his monthly residency at The Big Romance—a spot where Ricky’s vibe really comes to life.

Mark Grusane - Let The Games Begin    <June 2016 Mix>

In the first week of September we're heading to the beautiful scenery of Tisno, Croatia, to celebrate the first edition of Dekmantel Selectors. In the run up to the festival, we've launched a new temporary podcast-series where we invite ten of our selectors from the festival to dig deep in their unique collections. The idea behind the mix is to create a Time Document, focusing on a specific period of time with the artist being free in choosing this period. This period could in fact entail anything: a certain decennia, the time he or she fell in love, The Cold War, November ’92 – March ’93, or the rise of Nigerian music. It’s up to the Selectors to choose and tell us a story based on their music collection.

Selectors Podcast 008 comes from an established and respected record dealer based in the UK, who has been the go to guy for rare music for many years now. But if you don’t know Nick The Record, that probably is because he has focused on a DJ-career in Japan for the last decennia’s. It’s in the magical country where he started a series of parties with a Japanese crew called Lifeforce and eventually became the resident DJ. After throwing their first rave party in 1993, their alliance lasted for almost twenty years. Nick: "There was already a strong established club scene in Japan at the time, bringing lots of name DJ’s from the USA. The idea with Lifeforce was to add a little of the UK rave culture to the mix. It was a very grass roots, friends of friends type affair which grew organically. The music we played was mostly house and acid with some disco thrown in too."
 
With his Selectors Time Document, Nick travels back in time and takes us on a typical Lifeforce night trip. Nick: "So this mix actually spans two decades but focusses on a specific time of night. Lifeforce was usually held in a studio or warehouse space and was always an all night party going until six or seven in the morning (except for the outdoor parties that would always go longer). So within this mix, we zone in on the last hour of a typical night like that and the encore tunes. There was always still a good amount of people at the end of the night and they would always demand at least three encores. 

 His typical way of mixing is recognized within this mix. No proper four to the floor mixing, but good records and great vibes is what matters the most. Nick: "After a long night of high tempo dancing to house and disco, I always like to gradually slow it down a little with some slower house, disco and then gradually stop mixing and just play great records. It can be something super soulful, jazzy or trippy. Depending on the feel of the party, it can be something slow, deep and meditative, or something high octane to send the crowd home on a high. It will always be something highly emotive in the end. As a result of all this, there isn’t too much mixing within this mix. Just the first thirty minutes to slow you down and open you up to that early morning vibe."

Selectors Podcast 008 - Nick The Record

As a collector, digger and perhaps most importantly, a DJ; Nick’s records have taken him far and wide, from his long-running residency in the land of the rising sun to his soon-to-come DJ set at Field Maneuvers. Under the Nick The Record moniker, Nick played Japan’s very first outdoor rave in 1993. That moment then spawned the iconic Life Force, the open-air party that spanned two decades and took over many a frosty mountain top and woodland setting across the country. 

Now firmly back on London turf Nick combined his near-encyclopaedic knowledge of continent spanning sounds with a fellow music obsessive John Gomez to bring us Tangent; the regular club night from the two residents that’s become a staple for London’s avid dancers and club dwellers. The premise is simple; great records played through a great sound-system, and where everything from Afro, disco and house, to impossible to Shazam should-be classics guide the dancefloor. 

After recent inductions into the Dekmantel Selectors podcast we’re honoured to have him join the Field Maneuvers series with 78 minutes of emotive house, midnight heaters and ‘80s tearjerkers designed for peak-time serenades and moments of joy. 

Nick The Record: “Thanks to the FM crew for asking me to provide a mix. A lot of my mixes that are already online are mostly Disco & Afro, so I wanted to approach this one from a different perspective. I’ve been going to Japan every year since 1993 to spin sets and this mix is reflective of my time there and what I would play during a Life Force party. So, I started out with some house music but I couldn’t help throwing in a few African & ‘80s drum machine dance records. The track right at the end is a forthcoming release on Soundway too, a Re-edit from myself and Dan Tyler (Idjut Boys) of Tabu Lay’s Hafi Deo.
