The work was premiered by the London Symphony Orchestra and 4 East London school groups, 5th July 2018, at the Barbican Hall, London and conducted by Elim Chan.

Urban Nature, explores the complex relationships between nature and the city. This is represented by two distinct musical features: the evolving organic and delicate textures of nature, and the mechanistic and pulsating driving music of the city. These two musical ideas signify at battle between nature and humanity, closing with the belief that humanity must work alongside nature, and each other in order progress. The orchestra is expanded to involve students from East London secondary schools including spoken word, electric guitars as well as veena, thus creating an exciting, unique and new sound.  

Parts of the composition are inspired by working with young people and have been intertwined into the piece. The structure and meanings behind the piece are derived from workshops at St Edwards and Woodford, the city noise texture in the second section were inspired by students at Sydney Russell, and the melody used in the song were created by students at St. Paul’s Way Trust School. Lyrics were co-created by students at all schools and developed further by James Otto and Katy Jane.

Marka Tamea is a composer who creates using electro-acoustic experiments, synthesis, and field recordings. The music is characterized by a fusion of the commonplace and the imaginary, the discernible and the esoteric, which is fused with delicately harmony. The resulting experience takes the listener on an emotional journey of exploration while creating a heightened awareness of the environment and the physical world.

Marka has been active in the alternative music scene since the early 1980s and was one of the first to use digital sound modification techniques to create innovative ambient experiences. The musical style and ideology evolved through ongoing collaborations with Kymatik, an experimental collective that challenges the boundaries of sound perception.

To date, Marka has produced ten solo albums and also contributed to compilations including Nijmeegsche Electronische Waar - 4.0, Ressonus Net - Volume One, Gonzo Circus - Mind The Gap, Doppelganger 141 and Voices for Iran – 909 Connection. 2023.
