J. D. Loudermilk (1934-2016) wrote this guitar instrumental song for star country artist/guitar player and producer Chet Atkins (1924-2001) at the request of Atkins who had said to Loudermilk "I'm getting too deeply into jazz. I need to get back to my roots". 

During a filmed interview many years later Loudermilk humorously muses "I played this song for him and he picked up the guitar and finished it before I could finish it. (Incredulous) He finished the damn thing before I finished it ... and I wrote it!" 

Atkins was the first to produce a recording of his own performance of the song for commercial release through the RCA Victor label in May 1961. It was very successful and has since been covered by at least 14 other artists including Boots Randolf, Doc Watson, The Ventures, Carl Perkins and Scotty Moore, Steve Howe, Tony Rice, and Tommy Emmanuel. As such the song surely retains the status of a 'standard' in the country (guitar-picking) repertoire.
