Far Out Recordings proudly presents two previously unreleased tracks of glorious Brazilian sunshine music. Written and recorded in 1978 by pianist, composer, sound engineer, studio owner and former amateur skateboarding champion Ricardo Bomba, ‘Eu Sei’ and ‘Flutuando’ were almost doomed to total obscurity when the master tapes were binned following a ruthless studio clear out. Luckily Bomba kept a cassette tape copy from which Far Out has remastered the release for 7” vinyl/ digital.

Throughout a varied career, which included a four year stint as bandleader of Jorge Ben’s live show (78-82),  Ricardo Bomba had a string of idiosyncratic, underground pop hits throughout the 80s, including ‘Você Vai Se Lembrar’ which recently featured on Soundway’s Onda De Amor (Synthesized Brazilian Hits That Never Were 1984-94) compilation, as well as his then award-winning, now obscure solo album Ultralight (1988).

With the stunning vocals of Mariana Couto (the first wife of Chicago percussionist Laudir de Oliveira), legendary drummer Peninha who has recorded with the likes of Jorge Ben, Quarteto Em Cy, Lincoln Olivetti, Tony Bizarro and Gal Costa, and Brazilian guitarist Blimba Buarque, “Eu Sei” and “Flutuando” truly are lost gems of the late ‘70s Rio de Janeiro MPB scene.

Rebecca will be launching her own label in 2014 which will see the collaboration of various Jazz artists, musicians and electronic musicians working together to create a fusion project pushing music to the forefront of scenes which less contemporary styles of this music would perhaps not normally be seen within. On top of all of this Rebecca hosts a monthly party in her hometown of Glasgow alongside James Johnston (No Matter What Records) which has seen names such as Tom Middleton, Jeremy Underground (My Love Is Undergound), Terry Farley, Fabio Monesi (Wilson Records), Milton Jackson, Cottam and 6th Borough Project, with names such as Rick Wade, Terrance Parker, Kez Ym and many more to come Rebecca also promotes a bi monthly record fair at the Sub Club in Glasgow which sees many labels and vendors trading records, allowing people to come together for a day to appreciate music and support record sales. Labels such as Jazzman Records, Soma Records, Starla Records and many independent vendors trading Jazz, Funk, Latin, Classic Disco, Nothern Soul, World Music and many more regularly trade at the event as well as live art and music on the day.

We’re in for a treat today! On “Silver Afternoon”, Worm Discs affiliated power-jazz duo Run Logan Run return with their biggest record to date, adding vocals and orchestral strings to their signature tenor sax & drums sound.

Bristol-based duo Run Logan Run (Andrew Neil Hayes on tenor saxophone & Matt Brown on drums) team up with vocalist Annie Gardiner, producer Riaan Vosloo (Nostalgia 77) and a nine-piece ensemble for nine-minute single “Silver Afternoon” - their most ambitious statement yet. Continuing their relationship with local indie Worm Discs; “Silver Afternoon” will be available digitally and on vinyl as an extremely Limited 12” Single (with a ‘B’ side featuring locked groove samples from their forthcoming album) on 5th August 2022.

At the forefront of Bristol’s contribution to the new UK Jazz scene, Run Logan Run fuse powerful polyrhythmic breakbeats with screaming guttural saxophone and electronic manipulation to create a sound that’s direct, adventurous and elemental. 

Following their critically acclaimed third album ‘For A Brief Moment We Could Smell The Flowers’, they return with a bold statement reflecting their ceaseless search for something bigger... “Silver Afternoon”, an extended amalgamation of grooves and orchestral textures that sees the duo branch out into large ensemble performance for the first time.

The record was born out of Bristol’s Ankh Sanctuary concerts, a series Run Logan Run started during the third C19 lockdown, that provided space for artists to continue taking creative risks. There, they teamed up with bassist, composer and producer Riaan Vosloo for a forty-minute improvised set, eventually released on London’s PLAYNEUTRAL label in December 2021. 

This collaborative spirit informed the creation of “Silver Afternoon”, which is based around three melodies – one by Andrew, one by Matt and one by vocalist Annie Gardiner. They’re backed by a large ensemble which includes a string quartet, brass section and full backline, featuring many stars from the nascent Bristol instrumental scene.

The resulting track takes an intensely focused sound, and stretches it in multiple directions.
Vosloo’s detailed orchestrations bend two enticing ideas into endlessly inventive shapes, forming the backbone of the song and providing Hayes with fertile ground to let rip with trademark expressive soloing. 

Inspired by the likes of Archie Shepp’s ‘Attica Blues’, Mats Gustafsson’s Fire! Orchestra, and with notes of Nubiyan Twist, Natacha Atlas and Soweto Kinch, Silver Afternoon is a slow burner that swells into a vibrant, lucid statement of intent.

The recording of Silver Afternoon was supported by The PRS Open Fund for Music Creators, and the Ankh Sanctuary sessions by Arts Council England.

Out of all Franco Micalizzi’s soundtracks, this is the Holy Grail! The criminal domain usually occupied by the master in his famous police thrillers has been left behind. In Laure, also known as Forever Emanuelle, the territory explored is purely exotic/erotic: unadulterated Italian cinematic trip-hop, with the sensual vocals of Baba Yaga, the phenomenal percussion of Tony Esposito, the clavinet and fender rhodes of Enrico Pieranunzi. One of the most controversial films produced in Italy in the 1970s also hides one of the most surprising and original soundtracks ever completed in that period. Published in 1976 on RCA SP label, the record has been a joy and torment for whole generations of collectors, one of the most elusive of the series. Now, finally, remastered from the original master tapes preserved from the RCA archives, Laure can spin once again.

This week’s Slumber Session comes from someone who’s name is not only perfectly fitting but who’s hazy dreamlike music had is in such trance we knew there was no way we could pass up the opportunity to have her grace the slumber session series.

Dreamboy is the audiovisual project of the Canadian musician and singer/songwriter Esther Isabel Munits. The lady of many talents moved to Montréal in 2012 and quickly teamed up with producer Ben Borden (Solar Year) to work on her debut EP Negative Feelings and now after a tour assets up for her follow up EP, Endings. The release is a deep blend of country, gospel, hip hop and jungle influences that come together so form a wavey cut that we can’t get enough of.

Tommy Guerrero - Loose Grooves & Bastard Blues (Full Album)

The world has barely recovered from the previous sting of the Scorpio Man, when he lands in another dose. "Cold Turkey Time" from Ernie Hawks' debut album gets a single treatment here arriving back to back with the 45 only track "Tracking Down". The latter should make the b-boys move even if heard in the relaxing steams of a Turkish bath, where its breezy melodies eventually point at. 

"Cold Turkey Time" is a serious slab of jazzy funk that shares many of the exotica qualities of its partnering side. It might sound nice, while driving a fine European sports mobile down on a spiraling mountain road, preferably in a 60's dandy state of mind. The eerie wordless vocals at the end tie the package together so nicely that Dario Argento could have made a scene out of it. 

The continental vibes emanating from this vinyl single are bound to appeal to rare groove fanatics and secret agents alike. Ernie Hawks and his merry bunch of professionals are on a mean streak here, so keep listening.
