Mark XTC’s been something of a drum & bass kingpin in the North West of England for some time now. Currently lecturing in DJ and Audio Technology at Manchester College he’s been sharing his personal love of music for many years, through several different outlets. In the 80s he won the North West DMC DJ Championships and devoted his life to DJing and producing music with groups like The Mix Factory and Da Intalex (a duo with a certain man called Marcus who’d later go on to adopt the name and coin the Soul:ution label). 

After those projects disbanded Mark signed to Ray Keith’s Dread Recordings/Penny Black Records empire releasing music such as the <em>Come On EP</em> which in turn brought him to the attention of Dillinja and his Valve label with whom he’d go on to release tracks like ‘Keyz’ and ‘Roll Dem Beatz’. Over the years Mark’s also released on numerous other labels and as a result has played all across the world but he’s making the journey from his native Manchester alongside the Hit & Run crew to play Room Three next Friday. 

With a lineage as colourful as Mark XTC’s is was always going to be inevitable that we’d ask him to put together a mixtape but we’re even happier he chose to select 90 minutes worth of his favourite jungle records.

Mark XTC - FABRICLIVE x Hit & Run Jungle Classics Mix

Spin Inn, Eastern Bloc, The Mix Factory, Da Intalex...just some of the Manchester musical institutions and outfits that Mark XTC has been involved with in his now twenty five year career across records shops, clubs and early rave culture.

Playing across hip hop, classic house and also well known as a proponent of Drum and Bass / Jungle throughout his career Mark is a hugely versatile DJ and his Hacienda Tribute mix, published now on this site and soundcloud, sees him take to three decks and CD-J’s in putting it together.

Showcasing the skills throughout, taking accapellas, additional beats and put his own spins on the format, “Always There” and “Dirty Cash” knock out over classics such as Jam The Dance from the outset. A tribute to the recently passed Mark Bell with an airing of “LFO” as Mark throws in the better known tunes such as “Voodoo Ray”, “Promised Land” against US underground  such as Corina’s  “Temptation” 

With extended mixing a feature of the mix, and Mark laying his own markers, scratching in and out, from “French Kiss”, “Higher States Of Consciousness” and the Sasha remix of Better Days, Mark expertly blends the tracks in a set that pulls no punches.

The rarely heard dub of My Friend Sam featuring Viola Willis kicks off the final section of the mix as B Sides Volme II, ”Casanova” and “The Shaker Song” all come together as rare hip hop cut The Doc’s “Portrait Of A Masterpiece” and an untouched “Strings Of Life”  bring Mark’s exhilarating hour to a close.

RA.1000 launches with Theo Parrish, live at fabric: a vanishingly rare club mix from the king of deep crates and impossible transitions.

There are DJ sets and then there are Theo sets. No matter how many times you've caught him in action, every time still feels like the first. Running hot, levels smoking, isolator working over time. You think you know dance music? Think again.

Parrish's long-awaited debut on the RA Podcast is a milestone for the series, one we've sought for over 15 years. So it was only right that Theo led off our 1000th celebrations, the first of ten mixes this week. Recorded live at fabric last December as part of RA's collaborative party with the London club for their 25th anniversary, this three-hour segment documents the crescendo of his eight-hour marathon. 

The Detroit legend doesn't release mixes often, and when he does, they're usually studio recordings: think NTS shows, his 100% Detroit edition of DJ-Kicks or classic tapes Body (1997) and Methods of Movement (2020). A capture of the Sound Signature boss on the dancefloor is hard to come back. On RA.1000, you'll hear Theo in his element.

Sure, there's galvanising build-ups and crowd-pleasers, but laced throughout a Parrish beatdown are rarities designed to shock the system. In a business dominated by image-driven marketing, the vinyl master towers above thanks to a relentless hunger for lustrous melodies, moods and textures of all stripes, which he and he alone can fold into an inspiring and exhilarating joyride.

On RA.1000, blissful reggae precedes new wave disco; '80s R&B morphs into synthy techno; bleepy Chicago jack makes way for a poignant vocal ballad. Theo, once again, proves that anything and everything is possible with the right records.

Seven and a half exhilarating hours from one of modern club's sharpest.

Tim Reaper's mammoth entry for RA.1000 is all about range. You thought the Future Retro London boss was just a jungle and hardcore head? Think again.

The mix's infinite-scroll tracklist (the longest we've ever published in full!) includes a who's who of top-rate producers, from A Guy Called Gerald and Cari Lekebusch to Batu, Mia Koden and the one and only Shackleton.

Opening with weighty grime and ending on head-spinning drum & bass, the mix journeys through US club, wobbly dubstep, classic techno and, of course, many shades of jungle. Rather than go the easy route, the Londoner approached the assignment with the curiosity, integrity and vulnerability of fellow shapeshifters like dBridge, Calibre and ASC.

"The idea was to represent other styles of electronic music that I've been a bit self-conscious about openly expressing my interest in," he told RA.

RA.1000 isn't just another side of Tim Reaper's artistry: thankfully for us, it feels like only the beginning.

This week's show is dedicated to Jungle/Drum & Bass legend Marcus Intalex following his recent passing.

Marcus Intalex began as a House DJ in 1991, before becoming known as an early adopter of the Drum & Bass sound in the city of Manchester. In 1993, he and fellow DJ Mark XTC started the Drum & Bass radio show Da Intalex on Kiss 102 FM in Manchester, which they co-hosted until 2000. Marcus was called a "pioneer" of the movement by the Manchester Evening News, and also played a part in the development of the "Intelligent Drum & Bass" scene. As a DJ, he toured globally. He was also one of the first artists on the Hospital Records music label, as well as the founder of the recording label Soul:R, which he managed. He was also a cofounder of the label Revolve:r.

Marcus eventually began DJ'ing House and Techno again and touring under the new pseudonym of Trevino, after his favourite golfer Lee Trevino. In this spirit he also named a new House and Techno label for his personal love of golf, naming the label Birdie. In addition to his DJ'ing and recording career, he was the founder, resident DJ, and promoter of the Soul:ution series of Drum & Bass parties at Band On The Wall in Manchester, as well as the weekly "Guidance" series of club nights. In 2013 he became the namesake of the Marcus Intalex scholarship at the Manchester MIDI School.

His first single was released in 1994, entitled "What Ya Gonna Do". Later in his career, he released three albums. The first was FabricLive.35 in 2007, a mix compilation through the FabricLive series released by Fabric Nightclub. The second was 21, which he released on his Soul:R label in 2011, named in celebration of the 21st year of his career. In 2016, he had another album release, RA.EX309 Marcus Intalex under the Resident Advisor label. In addition to his albums, as of 2014, he had released fifteen LPs and ten further under the pseudonym Trevino, the latter focusing on House and Techno. Marcus also released tracks with Mark XTC under their collective name "Da Intalex", a moniker taken from the name of their 1990s radio show. He has also released many remixes which include Just A Vision by Solid State (2000), Better Place by 4 Hero (2001), LK by DJ Mary & XRS (2002)and Faceless by Commix (2007).

After many successful years in the Jungle/Drum & Bass scene, Marcus passed away on May 28th 2017 in Manchester. Marcus may have left us but his music will live forever... RIP
