There Once Was

Fire drops walls can’t  protect
Filthy water that will infect
Bleached bones in the midday sun
Shots rattle from a distant gun
Into the trailer single file
Another misplaced juvenile
Stench is strong as heads are bowed
Tightly packed no bags allowed

Dark waters to a better path
Slide away from the aftermath
Heard tales of a promised land
Can’t be far now close at hand.

Dipping under rusted wire
Leaving the frying pan for the fire
Slip down to the rugged shore
Face pressed to the salty floor
Push against the currents force
Whispering voices plot a course
Waves crashing as you start to slide
There’s no sign of the other side

Dark waters to a better path
Slide away from the aftermath
Heard tales of a promised land
Can’t be far now close at hand

Dirty bandage fallen slack.
Hands burnt from the last attack.
Biometrics have been destroyed.
The guard looks tired and seems annoyed.
Status can’t be verified
Documents won’t be supplied.
Ushered off to the holding cell.
Your latest twisted living hell.

When that title slipped into my mind it was all go and the early verse work felt bluesy with certainly blue notes to sing. The chorus wrote itself around the title with jazz chords. Changing key to the variation was natural enough but quite a long journey back to the verse again.

Art in her Bones

Out on the left - she’s made it her home
Some think she’s weird – and likely getting’ stoned alone
But I’m on the hook - just reel me in
It’s the art in her bones - that makes her what she seems to be

Sometimes at night- she wakes from a dream
She runs to her paint – got to liberate that scene
Then after an hour - she’s layin’ back down

She don’t deal with accounts and rates and supermarkets
She’s driftin’ through hazy lanes and blocks of colour
And something someone said three nights ago
She put that friend in embargo
Gotta work it through on canvas - then they’ll thaw in a tryst

Starlight curves across her body real – we’re playin’ seals
Lazy floppy as the sunlight grows

I should get over meself really
