This is my set from the Rebel Alliance party in London June 2021. Chicago acid house from the 80's. I felt like a young, upcoming DJ again, fresh on the decks. This set meant a lot to me. Why? Read on....

15 months after the horrible pandemic and no gigs, I missed playing out so much. But I wanted to go back to the roots of what I am about. Chicago acid and house is the music I grew up on when I was a 13-15 year old kid in Manchester. I have never got to play this stuff out as much as I'd have liked to over the years but it was all I ever listened to back in 1985-88. I would listen under my pillows on my walkman, hoping my parents wouldn't hear, wishing I was DJ. My biggest influence by far was Stu Allen - Piccadilly Radio, Key 103 (The X Rated House Hour). I still get goose bumps when I DJ with him to this day.

As you can imagine as a naive kid, that led to me travelling to loads of mad places to discover more about this music, not understanding the power of what I was getting into. I'd sneak out of my bedroom window and put my sisters doll in the bed just to be able to hear it all in a club. Blagging DJ spots on pirate radio, jumping out of windows to avoid the DTI and making friends with some incredible people who I will never forget (thank you all of you, Nick and Shirley FAB FM especially - you changed my life!). I'd spend every penny I had on records from places in Manchester like Eastern Bloc and Spin Inn. This kind of stuff is the style that got me totally devoted to what I do. Acid house, electro and Chicago house was (and still is) everything to me.

Anyway, I nearly got chucked out from doing this set for dancing too much and was told to sit down. It didnt stop me though and cartwheels ensued (see my FB video hahaha). It was a wonderful experience and one that I will never forget. Thank you Sterling Moss for making this happen and to all the wonderful acid techno people who came out and had fun. I hope I can get to do more. I could actually cry.

About Deetox:

With her big passion for hardstyle, Diana Zwerwer aka Deetox started her musical career back in 2010. In her first year she'd accumulated an impressive fourty gigs - from smaller events to bigger ones such as Indicator, Reset and the huge Ground Zero Festival. In short, she rocks the decks with her own kind of hardstyle - hard, raw and outside the box!

In 2012 Defqon 1, Alcatrazz, Loudness and XXlerator Raw were her highlights. And outside of Holland, she was getting noticed too - booked in Scotland and Switzerland for 2012. 

In 2013 Deetox is booked multiple times nearly every weekend, which is amazing for such a young DJ. Decibel Outdoor Festival, Dreamfields Festival, Intents Festival, Emporium, Bass Academy are already added to her already impressive list of gigs.

As well as DJing, Diana also produces her own music. In 2011 she had her first release on Theracords together with DJ Thera, called 'Silly Games'. She also made a remix of a track by the famous Dutch group The Party Animals. She kicked of 2012 with her first solo release, titled 'Once Upon A Time'. In 2012 'Black Magic' followed which pleased the very rawest of party visitors.
 
For 2013 Deetox conquered the charts with 'Here I Come', 'Contact' (ft. Phrantic) and 'Android' (ft. Delete).

Deetox is a fast rising star with a clear vision: becoming a well-known and respected artist within the hardstyle scene!

Mark EG's Megacast 005 Featuring Deetox (Theracords)

The UK techno subculture, which centres on techno music, includes a diverse array of ideologies, fashions and forms of expression, which can also include visual art, dance, literature and film. This subculture often exhibits the promotion of individual freedom.

The techno original subculture emerged in the United States, namely Detroit in the 1980's, quickly spreading to the United Kingdom. At the turn of millennium, the subculture began to diversify, which led to the proliferation of factions such as minimal, schranz and many others. 

But 2013 saw the original techno sound mutate into an even more powerful form with many new underground stars emerging including artists such as Tuomas Rantanen, Gabeen, Luis Ruiz and old favourites brushing up their sound such as Oscar Mularo, The Anxious, Reeko and Space DJz. Clean, clear and modern production with dirty, dark and punishing rhythms.

Original UK techno soldier Mark EG brings our attention to this 'second wave' of techno on a brand new mix, showcasing mainly new artists - quite obviously nodding to the punk era of the 70's, where a similar musical development took place.

Mark EG Presents 90's Techno Rave Volume II

This month, a huge fan of mine sadly passed away and I was asked if I could do a mix to be played at his funeral. He’d actually messaged me the week before saying he was coming to see me play at a gig. Eddy, like me, loved and lived for music. I didn’t know him on a 'best friends' personal level, but when I did spot him on the dancefloor there was that inevitable connection that you can only feel through music. You know – that feeling you get when something happens in the music where you both smile and think ‘yup, we’re on the same trip here – and my god listen to that riff!’. Sure I was the one playing the music, but it was the music that was in control here – not me, not him, not even life itself. 

When I heard of his passing I felt a huge sadness. The reality that nothing lasts forever - apart from music and memory - hit me. I can’t explain why I wanted to do this mix for him – I just did. I suppose I wanted to make something for a fellow music lover that goes some way to define the passion we all feel for this powerful force called music. 

Eddy loved the hard trance I play, so I picked music from a very personal point in my life when I used to work for one of the most amazing hard trance labels in the world – Bonzai. I pulled out some of the best music I was involved in during that period and put it together in a 38 minute mix. It was actually suppose to be only 30 minutes, but it didn’t tell the whole story without the last track, so I kept going.

As I write this, his funeral is today. I'm told the mix will be played as people enter the church.  Apparently glow sticks will be thrown into the coffin. ‘Firestarter’ will be played as he leaves to the other-side. When I go to that great place in the sky, I hope someone is left in this world that will do the same for me. Fun, friends, family, people you meet along the way are all so amazing, so precious of course, but life is nothing without music. Nothing. RIP Eddy x

It's a rave for kids and I thought I'd do them a version of this classic track without the ermmmm 'references'. It went down a storm - especially with the teddy bears! Haha. SHOCK HORROR!!! Me playing Grime!!!!

OK so, most of you know me for playing techno and hard trance and more electronic and dance based stuff. But bear with me here - there’s a method to this madness if you have an open mind. Let me explain….. 

In the last few years I started a project called ‘Safety In Music’, giving loads of young people and adults in the community, schools, prisons, schools etc the opportunity to make music or DJ whilst educating them on the dangers of gangs, knives, extremism, CSA etc.

I quickly came to realise that I needed to understand many different forms of music that I previously wouldn’t have even bothered listening to, so that I can get the interest of every single student in my classes no matter what music they’re into. So this is my latest mix, trying to understand the Grime genre. I did one about a year ago (it's on my Soundcloud), but it was instrumental. What I like about the instrumental part of Grime is it reminds me of techno stuff like Drexiya (Underground Resistance) and early electro from the 80's. Some really great rhythms. It’s actually really, really clever what is happening in the music here. 

This time though I wanted to challenge myself to put something together using the lyrics in the music too. I wanted to try to come up with something without the in-your-face negatives. Something that showcases the strength of the music rather than everyone woman is a b*tch and go shoot someone in the face right now. Unpicking insane and negative lyrics is something we do as part of our Safety In Music program, whether it’s Grime, Drill or even far right music. But I wanted to put together something that isn’t swearing and hate in every other word and to show people it CAN BE DONE. And challenge myself in the process. 

This was very, very hard. I’m not 100% sure I’ve achieved it, but I think I’m close. Lyrics are not my forte, and many of the sentences are street slang that are very hard for me to understand! I downloaded over 500 Grime tracks and 90% of them I simply could not use (even though WOW some of the music underneath was mindblowing!) Also the way you mix this music is very different to what I’m used to. I had to really think hard about it. I hope I've done it justice. 

Anyway, let me know what you all think! Yes it’s not techno or whatever, but it’s important to push yourself in life and that’s what I’m trying to do here for the benefit of the people I’m teaching.

So let’s research new music. I’ve been researching the French way of doing acid techno as I've been playing in France alot! They love acid! Thanks to everyone who has helped me. It’s different to UK acid techno that’s for sure! I made a quick mix of some tracks by Sevenum  after I met him at festival, laughed alot with him in the car, and he sent me his music. I was inspired! This is very interesting. UK acid techno, crossed with french acid, but with a trance slant and hardcore too. Superb! Let me know what you think!

PS. This is my first idea to do this, but I might do more of these if you want. I love doing research on new music who cares about the genre!

Mark EG Research Files 001 French Acid Techno Sevenum Six

So here’s a set of mine from 1996 (hard trance) @ Hysteria with NO HEADPHONES. It was one of the techincally WORST sets I ever played. A huge event too. 

But read on for the story...

This set I had no headphones as the mixer was broken - nobody backstage to help it get sorted (and we know how important headphones were back then!!!). The decks jumped, the stage was awfully set up, monitor didnt work at all. You have no idea how bad this was. The mixing was therefore SHIT. As much as I love the promoter, he didn’t do what needed to be done. Didn’t help that I jump around like a twat when I get into my music tbf but hey ho lol. Hysteria was a technical nightmare for all us artists. Ask anyone who played this gig, they will tell you the same. It was one of the most manic experiences I’ve ever had as a DJ in front of so many ppl. This was how it was in the 90's.

But alot of weekends were like that for us all in those days. Vinyl skipped, shit wasnt set up right. As DJ’s, we mucked in and did it for the ppl in front of us. That's what I've learnt in my life that you have to do. You work with what you have and you make the crowd rock. I hope I managed to pull it off? Hmmm.. Well I hope I did ;)

Let’s be honest. What DJ would you go and see that would do that these days? Everything has to be so damn perfect. It’s really sad. Who cared back then? Nobody. The music was so strong and mistakes is what make music imho. That’s why I love the 90’s so so much. Techno/hard trance/rave/whatever. All us DJ’s felt in the same boat. We did what we had to do to rock the crowd, even if we messed up :)

Mad love to Hysteria though. I know it feels like I’ve slagged them, but I really haven’t. I’m just trying to make you see it’s just the way it was back then. Quite comical in a way. I’m sure alot of older guys will relate to this. And you know what? I loved it! It’s the way it was and I wish we still had this madness!!! I really do. 

IMHO Perfection is good, but dont be the norm. Crap is good. Mistakes are what makes music good. That's the reason why new music is created, and how good art is made. I hope you see guys x
