Working on this remix was very special and even complex. The whole process turned into a full research work in music for spy/crime thrillers of late 60's and early 70's. I watched many classic movies (one of which even gave the remix its title and the mood), listened to cinematic works by Roy Budd, Ennio Moriccone, Lalo Schifrin, Stanley Myers, Basil Kirchin, David Shire and Serge Gainsbourg. You may probably even hear elements of their works here and there.

The work has gone far from and far beyond the original tune (although you may still hear all the instruments of the Dondurma orchestra playing their parts). However, I like the result very much.

Marsh Dondurma - Knafayim (Scorpio Remix by Markey Funk)

This is my second remix for Men of North Country. The concept was born out of the first line of the lyrics. I wanted to keep the Sci-Fi spirit of People of Tomorrow remix, but make something more dynamic, something moving. So the reference to time traveling was almost immediate - not the "Back to the Future" type, but rather a combination of H. G. Wells and "Dr. Who".

This remix is one of the first productions I did since completing my album "Instinct", so it has plenty of similar references. Yet, with it I was already exploring some new territories within the world of haunted groove music. Based on the song's title, I imagined one of the main streets of Tel Aviv in its darkest and emptiest hours. A kind of contrast, full of urban demons, to the image of the "city without a break".

I've known Ryskinder for nearly a decade, and we even tried to collaborate, so when he asked me to do a remix, it was a special challenge. Around the same time I was watching various vampire films by Jean Rollin, so it very much inspired me to take the remix in a horror direction.

From Sagol 59 album "Make Room" (JDub, 2008). When Sagol offered me to do a song together, my instant idea was to make him sing instead of rapping. The result is kind of 60's Atlantic/Stax soul tune with backing vocals by the great Noa Anava (Noa Nova).

After 2 months of listening over and over again to the original channels and trying unsuccessfully to push further in the same direction that I first had, I almost gave up and went to take a nap. In about 45 minutes I woke up with complete vision of remix in totally new direction - different from the first one... And I did it entirely in 8 hours...

Mordy Laye and the Group Modular - Electric Paint

Ever since CRuNCH 22 introduced "Cairo" in their live shows, it became one of my favourite numbers in their repertoire. Once given a chance, I set on a mission of taking the band's simple tight groove on a mind-melting trip. Like with my every previous remix, this was a chance to expand my palette and try new ideas. The real challenge here, however, was to build a larger new sonic world on top of recording that was already very full (even though it's just drums, keys and turntables). The result is an explosive mixture of a lot of stuff that I've been into recently - a long and trippy sound exploration journey, squeezed into four and a half minutes.

This remix is the first production I've done after me and Mule Driver completed the Mordy Laye album, and I think it was very much inspired by this exciting project. When I started working on it, I only had the first part in mind - until the breakdown of the first verse. But, the more I was listening to the female vocals -  the more they brought images from science fiction in mind: Rene Laloux' animated classics, like "La Plente Sauvage" and "Gandahar"; movies like "Forbidden Planet" and "The Andromeda Strain"; Ray Bradbury's "The Illustrated Man". Even when I decided to bring in synth solo part I still couldn't imagine that this will be the result - it all just happened spontaneously.

I'm a huge fan of Kip as a songwriter and musician and we've been friends for many years. So, when 3421 asked me to do a remix for their first song (with vocals, I mean), I didn't hesitate much. At first I wanted to do an all-psyched-out heavy remix and give it a Silver Apples sound, because I often call the guys "the Silver Apples of the bass generation", but Kip's writing is so melodic that I just stripped the song down to lead vocals alone and let them guide me to the new arrangement. I was listening to a lot of space age pop at the time, a lot of pre-Moog stuff from the early-to-mid-60's, so I gave the whole remix this feel of science-fiction-to-become-a-reality romance of those years.

This remix was one of the first things I produced after "(forgot the word)". When I completed the album, I was looking for something new. My old computer crashed and left me unable to continue working on anything that I was involved in before. At the same time I discovered Brazilian mid-70's psychedelia: Milton Nascimento and Lo Borges, Tuca, Flaviola, Luli e Lucina, Joyce, Tribo, Marcos Valle, Persona, Som Imaginario, Modulo Mil and many others. I was amazed by their creativity, how they were playing with structure, harmonies, even use of instruments. This was (and still is!) a deep well of inspiration. That's how the idea of Agitaçao Popular was born: taking inspiration from different corners of the world and different eras, bringing together people from different musical backgrounds, sharing ideas and creating together something new. Now this name stands behind all my activities that deal with lost chapters of history of creative music and counter-culture.

I'm also very proud of this remix as a rare document of musicianship of the great people that were involved in it.

This remix sums up 4 years of exploration of 1960-1970's psychedelia and its extension into music of today. It brings together the experiences I had, while working on the "Go Ask Alice" project, and later - while doing the Acid Test parties with Schoolmaster. This was also the reason for its title - "Ode to the Sugar Cube". It indeed is going very far from the original tune, taking the instruments and the lyrics of the song into entirely new context.

This is also the peak moment of Agitaçao Popular as a musical project (before it turned into a wider cultural concept). The remix was produced while I was helping Kobayashi Procelain to record their album (which is out very soon!), so the guys occasionally contributed some material. Huge props also goes out to Total Reboot for the synth solo in the mid-part, which took the hole thing into stratosphere.

When Men of North Country offered me to remix one of their songs, my choice of the tune and  direction was almost immediate - it was all in the title. Right about that time I was watching first seasons of the cult 1970's sci-fi TV-series - "The Tomorrow People", so all the ideas connected together very naturally. Taking the series' classic title theme by  Dudley Simpson as a reference, I decided to combine "old" and "new" types of arrangement, putting together symphonic and electronic elements with additional hints of cinematic psychedelia.

Izabo - Summer Shade (Vanguard Remix By Markey Funk)

Jerusalem-based musician/producer/DJ/turntablist/crate-digger and music archivist, Markey Funk is a staple of the Israeli groove scene. Starting off as a Hip-Hop and Funk DJ, Markey's musical palette has grown constantly wider and deeper throughout the years, embracing everything between Folk, Psychedelia, Early Electronic and Library music from around the world. While being famous for his explosive Soul-Funk-Psych-Groove DJ-sets, he’s also known as a freak of the 1960′s style, cinema and counter-culture. Besides collecting records and playing them for happy audiences, Markey has been writing and producing his own music for more than a decade: from hip hop beats, through fully sample-based debut album, to remixes for a wide variety of local artists. Recent years also saw his first globally distributed releases on vinyl: sitar-beat 7inch single under the moniker Les Hippies and the concept space-age groove full-length album "The Mystery of Mordy Laye", based on unfinished recordings by an anonymous local band from the late 1970's.
