This interview was recorded in Rua Red as part of a project I worked on with Al in 2018.

I got commissioned to make a work about Tallaght and Al was the first person I approached to collaborate with. Having both grown up there I thought he would be the perfect person to work on the sound design. Considering we both hadn't lived in Tallaght for years we wanted to look back on what it was like to grow up there during a certain period of time and see how it has influenced who we are. Although Al had never worked on the sound design for an art work before I knew he'd do an amazing job and I was blown away by the end product that he produced.

As part of the project, I interviewed a number of locals who'd gone onto do some great things, with Al being one of them. In this interview he talked about his early inspirations, the club nights he ran, how his music style changed throughout the years and the sense of community which developed through his nights. I have included some of the music which he talks about along with some of the tracks that he used to play. I've also included one of his own remixes and a release on his own Aciitone record label.

Al's club nights were like no other, there was an amazing atmosphere and a great sense of community and he made sure everyone felt part of that, which was something special. His sets at Acii Disco were exceptional and had an energy and vibe like no other, he was the best DJ and promoter in Dublin who brought so much joy and happiness to people. As a person he was warm, generous, caring and funny, he always had time and sound advice for people. He was a visionary and a natural leader with wisdom beyond his years, and I feel very honoured and proud to have worked with Al and to have had him as a friend, he really was one of a kind.

Emma Blake grew up in Glasgow, but the origins of her artistic career can be traced to Copenhagen. A few years ago she moved to the Danish capital for her studies, and a discovery of the local techno scene quickly led to her playing regularly at clubs like Culture Box. Usually this would involve spinning a mix of hard-and-fast techno and acid as one quarter of the much-loved Apeiron Crew, but the last twelve months have seen Blake gaining recognition beyond the collective. 

Blake’s offbeat studio work has played a part in this rapid ascent: her glitchy electro tracks have come out on labels like Outer Zone and Brokntoys, she regularly collaborates with Ctrls as Historical Repeater, and earlier this month Modeselektor used her pulsating cut 'Masha' for their 'Modeselektion Vol. 04' compilation. She joins them for Modeselektion with us on 16th June, so ahead of the date she sent a mix that highlights her love of broken techno and electro.

A little Acid Mix


This one is a special mix I want to dedicate to a friend of mine who lost her fight against cancer.
Her name is Geneviève aka Jane v8. She was a big music lover and dj.
I remember her as a positive person with a big heart.
We met in de 90’s. It was on a party in Café D’anvers.
We start talking in front of the dj booth where Juan Atkins was playing a set.
Then shared many parties and record store visits.
After a while we lost sight of each other, until about 2 years ago.
We had contact again via social media.
2 days after she passed away, I got a message on messenger from her husband.
He was telling me that on her last days she told him that she wishes that her record collection had a
second life with me. I was getting very emotional when reading that message.
So this set is mixed with only her records from which I have made a selection.
It felt like I was doing a back to back dj set with her.

BIOG:
I've been involved with electronic music in Liverpool for over two decades. Back then I was resident at techno club night Voodoo and co-promoter/resident at T-Funkshun. I subsequently started releasing my tracks from 2002 onwards; producing under my own name and pseudonym Casio Royale. I'm also a member of Scouse live techno group Phantom Planet Outlaws with Binny and John Heckle.  My music has been featured on record labels from around the globe; Liverpool, Manchester, London, Glasgow, Dublin, Belfast, Berlin, Athens, Chicago, Singapore.

Club appearances include Tresor Berlin, Bangface Weekender, I Love Acid, Tensile, Jerome Hill’s DON’T, White Hotel Manchester, La Cheetah and Boiler Room at Sub Club, Glasgow.
