This part 1 of a a very special two mix set dedicated to classic drum n' bass sounds, reimagining nights at two of the most influential London clubs of all time: Speed and Metalheadz. This mix focuses on imagining a night at Speed at the Mars Bar, Soho ... a night I never went to!

From the blog post:

Taking place on a Thursday as well as being located right in the heart of London instead of a massive warehouse on the outskirts meant that Speed attracted a different, more mature crowd, including curious fans of other styles of electronic music as well as people from the music industry. It’s hard to overstate the importance of this night to the development of the lighter side of drum n’ bass – it was a testing ground for new sounds that could then be taken on the road around the UK (and the world!) on the weekends. It was a place where people from the scene – producers, dj’s, a&r’s, hangers-on – could connect, interact and plan collaborations. It was somewhere that this sound could take root and grow, away from the pressure cooker environment of the big raves, where thousands of teenagers wanted the latest mental sounds. It was also a crucial venue for spreading the sound beyond the existing scene, a place where people who would never dream of going to a One Nation or AWOL or Roast could be turned on to high-speed breakbeats.

This mix collects the 15 solo tracks Flytronix (aka Danny Demierre) released on Moving Shadow from 1995 to 1997. These include the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Encounta 12"s, 3 remixes, and 2 contributions to the Storm From the East compilations.

Flytronix was on a (rare) tear then, producing all-time classics The Rhode Tune and NRG & Consciousness, as well as deep cuts brimming with jazzy, unpredictable musicality. Flytronix drops never revealed everything at once; he would gradually layer on drums and instruments with a storytelling sense largely lost in jungle/dnb today.

It's just Danny here. His collaborations with Alex Banks, JMJ, and Peshay are worth independent study, as are his tracks from 1998 onwards, especially the Archive LP. RQ's artwork brilliantly mashes up Flytronix' artwork for the 2nd and 4th Encounta 12"s. Track list is below. Enjoy!

this is the follow-up to the part one (obviously :)), recorded it mainly for two reasons: way too many missed brilliant tunes from sub-100th release era, and the unconditional love for the Moving Shadow, the era it represents and the way these tunes shaped me. consider it a healthy amount of nostalgia, the soundscape I fell in love with, and pushed me towards drum&bass in general. clever use of samples, old jazz/funk breaks, mellow rhodes, heartbreaking melodies, deep pounding subs... you know the drill.

recorded in the same manner as the other parts: two stanton st-90 turntables, a numark dm3001x mixer and two stanton sk520 cartridges. all vinyl, of course.

Moving Shadow Mammoth Mix Pt.2

This is the third part of my Moving Shadow Mammoth mixes, and at the time of writing this introduction, also the final. This one is different to the first two in the sense that it concentrates on music released in the second half of 1990s. Somewhere in 1997 Moving Shadow took a slight turn musically, becoming faster, more synthesized, some may argue, colder and darker; much like most of drum&bass in that period of time. It was time for acts like Dom & Roland and Technical Itch to really break through, also the rise of Calyx. Despite the fact that some may dislike what Moving Shadow became, it still put out quality music, in comparison of many its peers. The differences between the softer and harder end became more noticeable, so this period of time reflected in the mix (circa 1997-2000) is a bit like a river with some calmer bits, some waterfalls and some dangerous rocky streams.

In this mix, all the releases are post-100th, which I consider kind of a milestone.

I have some plans regarding parts 4 (and perhaps even 5), however, I can't promise anything right now.

Again, the mix was recorded from vinyl, my old trusty Stanton ST-90 turntables and 520mk2 cartridges.
