Codewiz's Electronic & Synth

Sooo... here's an old earworm, that I just couldn't resist. Many of you remember the classic "Are you keeping up with the Commodore" commercial, and I had several requests over the last year if I could do a number on this. I tried to keep as much as possible from the original, but upgrading it, beefing it up and make it a little more snappy.

Since there are no multitracks available with the original vocal recordings, I just used www.vocalremovers.org since it's free, and it did a decent job of separating the voices from the backing track. Some phasing and flanging occurs, but I hope the delay and reverb plus the blending in the mix covers most of that anyway.

The song is in 163 BPM, so there's little time to relax, but it also gives a good drive. Using a lot of everything here, Roland MKS modules, Yamaha TX and Motifs, Kurzweil 1000PX, Alesis QSR, Ensoniq SD-1, TS-10, Sequential TOM and various other hardware synths. Some ReFX Nexus2 with various expansion packs here and there, and some SID/Chiptunes thrown in for good measure. It's after all... about the Commodore, right?

Tried to find the original composers and songwriters, but couldn't find any. If you happen to know who made this song, please let me know in the comments.

Back in 1997 I wrote this half-way thing called "Epic of the 90s" which I had intended for The Gathering (Norway's famous data party). However, I never got around to complete it, and just recently found the original files on my Roland XP-60. So there was only one thing to do: Rework it and make it into something suitable for 2018. 

The song is a little homage to all the great artists in the demo groups and crews who made these parties what they were and are today.

An original Amiga demoscene oldskooler and current video games composer, the name TDK was originally active in the early 90’s writing catchy and melodic chiptunes for the likes of Anthrox, Crystal and Melon Dezign. Having 'retired' from the scene in 1993 I went on to write the music for such games as Wing Commander (Amiga), Duke Nukem Total Meltdown, Populous: The Beginning and Dungeon Keeper 2.

The advent of the CD-Rom format, and therefore music licensing, threatened my role as a composer so I moved into sound design within my favourite video game genre, driving games.

As a self confessed petrol head, working for Codemasters from 2008, I headed up the audio team on the DiRT, Formula 1 and GRID franchises until 2015 I went 'full circle' back to composition and wrote the OST for F1 2015. Since then, I've penned the soundtracks for Overlord: Fellowship of Evil, the Indie game D/Generation HD - which I originally worked on in 1993, and F1 2016. After finishing F1 2017, I started my own audio production company, SONiC FUEL.

Never leaving the chip sound behind, 'TDK' was brought out of retirement at the end of 2012 with the release of my first album, Reawakening, and I've since fused my love of chip with my passion for the electric violin to perform a unique chiptune-violin set at SuperByte 2013, Chipfest, and Nintendoom 3.0. 

I'm now back writing in a number of different styles, but perhaps my main love of 70's analog synths may take charge of what I write.

Either way, TDK is back! Flit Kills Moths is back! (until Esso sue for brand copyright).
