The song is a first-person narrative exploring the internal conflict of being in a seemingly perfect relationship that provides no emotional fulfillment. The central theme is cognitive dissonance—the psychological stress of holding conflicting beliefs—specifically, the contrast between a relationship that is objectively ideal ("perfect on paper") and the singer's subjective feeling of emotional numbness ("I feel absolutely nothing'").
