Some of us are so used to working all the time that we feel like we're doing something wrong when we rest. A clear mind from taking time to chill can be a huge way to catapult ourselves forward. This is what I did today and I'm hugely proud of myself for releasing the urge to do work throughout the day. 

I did what felt like ease and allowed myself to feel successful for choosing the easiest options today. Super proud of my resting.

We're so conditioned to work hard and press through and force out work. What if we can approach "work" differently? What if what we are meant to create, produce, and present can flow to and through us? What if we can approach the concept of "work" with more ease?

Well, that's what I've been doing the last few days. This weekend I allowed myself to rest. I was very intentional about doing only what I felt like doing. And through the moments of relaxation, ideas (for projects I've been trying to force out for the last few months) have just flowed to and through me. 

I was watching a movie, and having a really chill moment, and I saw the dynamic between a husband and wife that I want to address in my upcoming course, Healing Our Families: For Father's Only. Ideas just kept showing up for various projects that I've felt stalled on. And I realized that maybe this is part of it.... that through ease and letting go, ideas and insights can flow to me more freely. 

That's when it came to me that maybe this #MARCH4WARD month can be about moving forward with ease, rather than by bullying myself into producing "or else." 

Anywho... that's what today's episode is about... and a.... lot a bit about executive dysfunction and my experience of #ADHD.

I was always someone who didn't want to be bothered or to be a bother so I would never return anything. Now, I'm beginning to recognize that that's my money and I get to have it back. My new mantra "I'm worth the effort," has been stepping in to remind me to do what needs to be done for my sake with no apologies. 

It's a small thing possibly to you, but I have left sooo much money on the table over the years because I didn't feel worth the effort. Today, I got my money back and it was a pivotal moment for me.

Today, I saw the beginnings of a miracle. A situation pivoted so quickly after I shifted what I believed. I didn't realize the deeper beliefs that were at play until I shifted them and saw an almost instantaneous pivot. 

It's really got me thinking what other situations can turn around by simply shifting where I place my faith. I tell the actual story on today's podcast. Check it out if you're intrigued.

How available are you for everyone else? How available are you for yourself? Do you feel guilty for not being available for others? Do you feel the same about not making time for yourself?

Today, I realized that I primarily show up as a supporting character in everyone else's drama, and I'm rarely on set for my own show.

That visual hit me during the podcast—that I can look at the people in my life as having their own shows. And I have my own show. So if I am spending more time playing supporting roles in everyone's drama, I'm never really on my own set!

And I honestly don't know what to do with that. I'm not going to lie and say I have the answer on how to fix this. I literally just realized it today while recording my podcast.

One thing I learned from an amazing coach some time ago is that awareness is the most important thing. Just recognizing a behavior or thought pattern that we didn't realize was happening is a win in itself....

I admit that as a woman, as a mom, as a single mom... of an only child...  I am definitely societally conditioned to be primarily not on my own set. The more we sacrifice and make ourselves available is how we show we're good at being women, friends, moms, partners, spouses, etc. I'm not saying I agree with this, just that I've definitely been conditioned by it. 

The good thing, though, is that some years ago it hit me that I am here for more than to be a mom. Mom is just one of my titles. Currently it's my most important and most prioritized one, but there are other aspects of me, too. I have primarily just focused on the supporting roles I am to play in other's lives, but today that image of my vacant set helped me remember I am here for more than to be a daughter, a friend, a partner... a fill in the blank.

At some point, I get to be the main character in my own story. And now that I have this awareness, I get to start thinking about what that looks like....

When I stay in today, I can see how much I have to be grateful for. When I try to figure out how things will work down the road, I'm anxious, because I don't have the answers. 

Today, I realized that the best thing I can do for myself is to try my best to remain focused on what matters right now in this moment. I used to feel that "serving two masters" was about religious choices. However today, I got to see another way of viewing it. 

As I stressed myself out earlier trying to address tomorrow's problems with today's resources, I saw that I was attempting something impossible. Today, I got a new outlook... as I was serving two masters by attempting to be in two places at once. 

I was living in today, with the resources needed for today. And rather than be grateful that I had what I needed for today, I was stressed out trying to figure how to get today's resources to solve next month's problems. When I let that go, and accepted that next month will take care of itself, I realized I had so much to be grateful for. I had more than enough for today's needs.

So a few days ago, I shared a post about an anti bucket list... to make a list of things we need to stop doing. Well, this morning, I woke up and listened to this Abraham-Hicks recording I felt guided to check out. From that I decided that in order for me to get better at being happy and remaining that way, it will be helpful to develop a list of things I do that make me stop being happy. 

Oddly, I got to see one right out the gate. It's a funny thing that happens when we decide to become aware of our tendencies that don't serve us. We get answers and sometimes quicker than we anticipate.

I don't need to act less qualified. I don't need to worry about your opinion. I don't need to feel you know more than my inner knowing....

I've got a purpose. I've got things to share. I've got work to do. And I'm acknowledging that I'm the one to do it.

A painful thing that I don't hear people talk about is how hard it can be when we're still healing from the impact of someone's hurtful words and behavior and they suddenly put the past behind them and become a "good" person.

Even though their transformation is a great thing, and possibly something we've longed for. We, the ones who were harmed, are still in therapy, meeting with support groups, fighting off addictions, dealing with self-loathing, attracting unhealthy relationships and so on.... possibly decades later. And they get to just decide one day, "Hmmm... I think it's time for me to be a better person," and poof, their work is done.

Today, on the podcast, I talked about navigating the unfairness of this. I let it be okay that we feel as we feel. And I offered some alternate perspectives to consider. 

If you can relate to this, I hope it brings you comfort. If you are on the other side of this, I hope it will help you to empathize with those you've hurt. And I commend you for healing.

We can be so hard on ourselves. 

When we're on this journey toward becoming more of our truest selves, we will have slip ups. It's just part of it. 

We need to be kinder to ourselves and recognize that many of our patterns of thinking and ways of being have been solidified over time. We've been thinking certain ways, responding certain ways, and expecting life to show up for us in certain ways for not just days, or months... sometimes for DECADES.

Why do we think a habit that took years to make, will be gone in days? It's not realistic. We could do well for a week, or a month, but if life starts lifin' (or we get hangry), it's really easy to shift back to our old default setting. It's familiar. 

We need to realize that the fact that we even noticed that we are doing that thing again shows we've grown. There was a time when we didn't notice. There was a time when it was our default setting. There was a time when it was so natural that we would just go on being and doing as normal. 

The fact that we noticed is something we should celebrate. We're growing. We're shifting. We're becoming aware. And that means we're making progress. So let's be kind to ourselves.

Let's notice what's going on that led to us slipping into that old pattern. Were you hungry? Were you around a certain person from your past? Were you feeling physically uncomfortable? Something as simple as the tag in your shirt rubbing against the back of your neck, or being too hot/cold, sleepy, or hungry could cause you to slip into that old default setting. Check in with yourself. And be kind to yourself.

Effort or Ease?

Does it have to be hard to be valuable? Does it have to be hard-earned to make a person worthy? If you work smarter, not harder, are you deserving?

These are the questions that are swimming in my head. Lately, a lot of my “core beliefs” that became a part of me through observation, environment, and suggestion are becoming less valid. I’m starting to question what I’ve believed and wonder what really matters. 

So much of who I’ve been, or not been, has had much to do with concerns about external perceptions. On today’s podcast I tackle the belief that doing things the hard way is what makes it valid.

We make time for everybody.... their emergencies, their emotions, their needs, wants, and priorities. 

Some of us will only slow down if illness takes us down. We secretly smile from our sick bed because we finally have a reason... the right to say, "No." 

Yeah, we know we're supposed to take better care of ourselves. Yeah, we know that we need to set better boundaries. But you know what nobody tells you? It's hard as hell to set and hold boundaries when you're exhausted. 

It's easy when you're refreshed and restored to say, "Hey, buddy. No. I'm not doing that." But when you're tired and you just don't have the emotional or mental reserve to deal with the pushback or backlash or the unpleasant emotional response of another human, it's sooo easy to slip back into that default setting... the people pleasing, the saying, "Yes," when you want to say, "No," the going along with plans you don't agree with... The stuff you said you were going to stop doing. The stuff you actually did stop doing....

If this is resonating with you, you are possibly at a point where you need to muster up the extra energy to acknowledge it's time to start saying, "No," again. It's time to get by yourself and regroup. It's time to put yourself on your schedule, rest, recoop, or even create a plan for how you can just veg out for a few hours. 

Don't wait for illness or some other unfortunate circumstance to come and rescue you. You deserve the you that you offer to everyone else. Be your own your own advocate. Whether it's 15 minutes or 15 days, pour back into yourself. It's time.
