For some time now we've been gathering field recordings for use in our creative projects.  We've decided to start posting a few of them here for listeners looking for a natural alternative to music for relaxation, meditation and study.  Feel free to download them to listen when and where you choose.

Volume 1 gathers up a small sampling of the amazing Nova Scotia soundscape.  With no looping whatsoever, enjoy four and a half hours of the natural world around us.

Theraphonia - Soundprint Archive Vol. 1

This playlist focuses on the therapeutic side of brain entrainment, i.e., making it quicker and easier to achieve a desired mental state like meditation, sleep, study, focus, etc. Our "recreational binaurals" appear in a different list.

These projects are not the typically sterile sine waves of mobile software generators but rather fusions of effective tones, field recordings from the natural world, and abstract generative compositional approaches. They are less about music and more about texture and atmosphere.

Most of our initial releases use binaural beats to create the requisite brainwaves.  Headphones are essential for the experience since the waves are produced by discrete pitch differences between the left and right ears.

Once you've gotten the hang of binaural-assisted meditation and quickly getting your brain into a relaxed and regulated state, try experimenting with a recreational binaural from the other playlist for a completely different kind of experience.

Obviously, operating heavy machinery under the influence of sleep and dream inducing binaurals qualifies as a really bad idea...

Theraphonia - Brain Entrainment Experiments

These "thought experiments" with binaurals are less focused on augmenting meditation and more on seeding the imagination and engaging the body.  They're not a substitute for serious meditation, just a playground to explore the effects of binaurals on different states of consciousness.  That said, we've had some pretty expansive experiences with them, so let us know how they do for you!

This is a recording of MacIntosh Brook Falls on the Cabot Trail in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia.  The microphone was placed back about 20m from the main falls at a point where an adjoining stream flows into the main brook, so while the falls themselves provide plenty of rushing water fullness, beneath that the streams bubble and roil musically.  Helpful for heavy noise masking for study, sleep and meditation.

This thought experiment uses a carrier frequency of 87.3 Hz - the key of F, and produces a theta binaural of 6.2 Hz.  The track uses a personal favorite field recording "Frogsong at Miner's Marsh" with the operatic crooning of green frogs recorded in the Annapolis Valley, Nova Scotia.  That recording is also available in Soundprint Archive Vol. 1.  The binaural itself is mix isolated for increased effectiveness.

This thought experiment uses a carrier frequency of 175 Hz - the key of F, and produces a theta binaural beat of 7.2 Hz.  It sounds a bit like finding an EDM drum circle in the middle of a jungle.  Feed your creativity circuits, reach deeper states of consciousness and open your mind to imagination.  The carrier is isolated in the mix, so even though there's a lot going on at times, the binaural itself is constant.  Happy Trails...

Theraphonia - Jungle Encounter 5 Binaural [F175Hz θ 7.2Hz 30m]

This thought experiment uses a carrier frequency of 73.4 Hz - the key of Dmin, and produces a binaural beat at the threshold of alpha and beta of 14 Hz. Binaural beats at this frequency may produce heightened focus, a boost in analytical thinking, problem-solving and "high-level cognition".  Your mileage may vary.  The carrier is mix-isolated so the music doesn't step on the binaural.  We would love to hear your experiences with it!

Theraphonia - Awakening II Binaural [D73.4Hz β 14Hz 30m]

This thought experiment uses a carrier frequency of 55 Hz - the key of Amin, and produces an alpha α binaural beat of 10.41 Hz.  Binaural beats at this frequency may produce deep relaxation, but as an experiment, try focusing on gratitude, whether it's for an act of kindness or the thrill of a cool breeze or beautiful vista.  Then let us know in comments what you experienced.  Gratitude is a powerful force in the brain that can uplift and help fight off depression and anxiety.  At least, that's been our experience.  As always, even though the music is quite active and rhythmic, the binaural track is isolated so the music and textural elements don't step on it.

Another binaural from our EVOX series, this one in a nice sleep-friendly 60 minute length.  It's a full-spectrum binaural, meaning everything in the right channel (not just the binaural tone) is shifted up to create the 3.2 Hz binaural beat.

Not far from the shores of the Salton Sea in California stands a mountain of hay bales, plaster and paint.  Thousands of colorful messages declare "God loves everyone" and "Love One Another".  The mountain was the 30 year work - some would say obsession - of Leonard Knight.  In this track, Leonard shares his simple philosophy set against a sweet, warm lullaby of electric piano and guitar.  While Leonard is gone now, his mountain remains, still inspiring many others in many ways.  This song is from Raygun Ballet's 2013 album Big California.

TE02D - This experiment explores hitting the brain with a strong binaural signal three different ways at the same time.  First, the traditional binaural wave (courtesy of brainaural.com) runs at 4.2Hz.  Above that are drones and spacey sound effects - combined and panned left and right at 4.2Hz.  Then one ear's signal is pitch shifted up 4.2 Hz for across the full frequency spectrum.
