Italorator w/ Marsman [Episode 11]

For this episode of the series we have a special, as the guest slot features a live recording of Marsman's set from the recent FERMA x Pinkman Label Night that took place on May 31st in Six Dogs Athens. First hour by resident Romphea.

At the helm of his beloved label, Marsman preaches the ‘Pinkman sound’ to congregations of devoted followers. Holding court for over ten years now, he released more than 100 records and hosted countless club nights all over the world.

With over 15 years behind the decks, and the breathless release schedule he orchestrates for Pinkman and its subsidiary labels - Mindri, Broken Dreams & Charlois - Marsman has become a central figure in a close-knit scene of rough-around-the-edges DIY dance music.
Marsman’s DJing can ride through uplifting synths and thunderous drum patterns that are equally suited to dark, sweat-drenched basements and cavernous industrial warehouses. But dig beneath the dirt and there’s brightness to be found, with a glossy Italo sheen never far from Marsman’s selections.

Keeping clubrooms locked into groove for hours on end by meticulously building atmospheres of unease, he can pierce the tension whenever he feels the time is right with moments of hands-in-the-air euphoria. Combining euphoric disco and wave with darker, harder sounds is a trademark move from one of Rotterdam’s finest exports.

And he’s done it at all the best spots the Netherlands has to offer, with appearances at Dekmantel, Garage Noord, Pip, Drift Festival and Intergalactic FM. Further afield, he played at renowned international clubs like Panorama Bar, Tresor, Khidi and FOLD.

Beyond all this, he’s a founding member of cherished radio station Operator, and previously ran the sorely missed Pinkman record store in the heart of Rotterdam’s creative Schieblock, giving Marsman a well-deserved cult hero status for independent music in the harbour city and far, far beyond.

Krake x Brvtalist is proud to present a new mix from Marsman. Ahead of the Krake Festival in Berlin this coming weekend, we're excited to bring you this special edition mix from one of the fest's headlining artists. Founder of Rotterdam's Pinkman records alongside its three offshoots Mindri, Broken Dreams and Charlois, he also ran a beloved record store at the beating heart of Rotterdam’s creative district, and co-founded Rotterdam's online radio Operator. What his work has in common is its ability to form a community out of a disparate group of outsiders with bravado. As a DJ, Marsman wants to make you dance with your head held high. His sound evokes a retro-futuristic euphoria. Nostalgic without being stuck in the past, it fosters the return of songs to the club; of sex, warmth and basslines to the dancefloor. Not confined to any one genre, expect to hear some of the best outsider sounds and infectious tracks from across wave, body, italo and well beyond. I

‘Italorator is definitely one of my favorite shows right now. It’s a great honour to record this mix with some of what I consider classics, whether they are older or newer productions. 

I love classics, and it’s rare to find a space where you feel 100% comfortable to dive in and present your favorites from that time. There’s always a hidden gem here and there, and for me, Italorator is the new atlas for discovering them. Many thanks to Marsman and Operator for creating this space, which is so necessary to keep the movement alive and to give us the opportunity to share and learn with every new show. 

I dedicate this mix to my mom - she always loved new wave, Italo, and classic ‘80s songs. I remember when I was little, she would always put on those video cassette/DVD compilations, and I was hypnotized watching all the beautiful (and dramatic) video clips, always wanting to go back in time to live that era. I guess she has no idea how much influence this had on what I do. Anyway, I hope you all enjoy it.’

"It was a big pleasure for me to play at Italorator! Like Marsman, I got hooked on italo and disco because of I-F's Cybernetic Broadcasting Station, that later turned into IntergalacticFM. Its influence on my musical taste can't be overstated. After being an avid listener, programming shows and doing a lot of work behind the scenes, I started making monthly deejay mixes for IFM some three years ago and haven't stopped since. For my Italorator mix I decided to focus on mid 80s italo songs that are heavy on synth action and drama. One to sing along to with clenched fists. I hope you enjoy listining as much as I liked mixing it up. Playing disco for the dancer, all ready for the sound!"

"First of all thank you again for the invite, I’m super happy to be on italorator! It’s probably my favourite mix series at the moment.

Initially I tried to exclusively pick tacks that hadn't been featured on italorator before but I certainly missed some. In the end I went for a selection that best reflects my personal taste and appreciation for the genre, including some of my all time favorites and new found gems. Besides Italo I ventured into adjacent genres like early acid house and new beat but kept the overall vibe seductive and sleazy, just how I like it. I have been waiting for a chance to open a set with Einzelhaft by Falco (from one of the best albums ever made, no doubt) and this seemed like a worthy occasion."
