In this work for percussionist, the performer controls the resonance through the new extended pedal system. The body of the piano becomes a multifaceted sound object whose internal parts generate complex reverberations.

« Fractales winds » - Benjamin Maneyrol et Renata Kambarova

L'œuvre est une immersion dans l’espace résonant de la Maison du peuple (Saint-Gilles, Bruxelles). La création intègre les spécificités architecturales de ce lieu. Les deux instruments (flute et clarinette) sont spatialisés. La résonance des matériaux sonores et phénomènes acoustiques qui construisent la pièce (battements, multiphoniques, bruits blancs, souffles, sons granulés, sifflements…) est modulée par l’espace – transfigurée par ce dernier.

Des passages statiques et mouvants jalonnent les différentes séquences. Mobiles, les deux musiciens évoluent sur les impressionnants balcons de la salle supérieure (permettant un jeu riche et détaillé sur la résonance et directionalité), puis, à la fin de l’œuvre-concert, descendent progressivement sur scène (corridors et espaces vitrés semi-étouffés), prenant place parmi le public.

Les diverses configurations spatiales qui émergent créent une perception sans cesse renouvelée, parfois aux frontières de l’air et du silence et du visible et de l’invisible. Le parcours musical entremêle d’autres œuvres d’hier et d’aujourd’hui, redécouvertes au fil du parcours en mouvement.

The extended pedal project (led by Martin Loridan) aims to bridge a gap between the investigations of new intra-piano playing possibilities and the evolution of the piano pedal system, still without any possibilities of activation beyond the keyboard position. This research develops a system allowing precise control of the string dampers beyond the conventional keyboard configuration. The device is a physical extension that is “grafted” to the piano. It allows activating the sustain pedal remotely, i.e. from the sides of the piano.

The remote-control possibilities considerably extend piano techniques and create new avenues for composition. The renewed access to the pedal and the reworked finesse of control allow envisaging new soundworlds and notations, and revisiting a rich repertoire of existing pieces. The prospective effort is therefore coupled with a retrospective insight into the development of the piano, whose construction has remained largely unchanged for the last 130 years.

Solar Winds is an immersive sound experience. Prepared piano and cello are both acoustic sources and sound projection media, creating unexpected fusions between amplified and electronic instrumental textures. The vibrant sounds of the Earth's magnetic field and the powerful sounds of solar particle winds appear and mingle directly with the body and wood of the prepared instruments through active amplification and diffusion and projection devices.

Solar Winds est une immersion sonore. Piano et violoncelle préparés sont à la fois des sources acoustiques et supports de projection sonores, créant des fusions inattendues entre  textures instrumentales amplifiées et électroniques. Les sons vibrants du champ magnétique terrestre, ceux, puissants, des vents de particules solaires, apparaissent et se mêlent directement au corps et au bois des instruments préparés à travers des dispositifs d'amplification, diffusion et projection actifs.

Solar Winds déploie un dispositif d’amplification-spatialisation complexe, développant le principe de l'instrument actif pour deux instruments en dialogue (violoncelle et piano). Des microphones et enceintes de vibration positionnent l'amplification et la diffusion au sein même des deux instruments, permettant à chaque interprète de maîtriser, grâce à un système spécifiquement conçu, sa propre diffusion, tant interne – sur le corps de son instrument, qu'externe – vers le corps de l'autre instrument. L'intégration exclusive de dispositifs amplificateurs actifs par contact sur les deux instruments brouille la frontière entre acoustique et électronique, entre réel et augmenté. 

L'archet du violoncelle est également activé par la "greffe" d'un capteur piézoélectrique, qui, à travers le bois (et le jeu col legno) amplifie l'ensemble de l'instrument, situant ainsi la source de l'amplification simultanément sur la table d'harmonie et sur l'archet, conférant à l'activation une versatilité appliquée tant à l'instrument qu'à son mode d'excitation. Pour le piano, le microphone de contact devient un instrument de frottement-déclenchement, révélant sous un jour nouveau les moindres reliefs des composantes de l'instrument.

Dans ce contexte, l'électronique devient un élément fusionnel, se confondant avec le son acoustique amplifié. Les différentes sonorités diffusées dans le piano (captations NASA de vents solaires, champ magnétiques terrestres, sons blancs et granulés) fusionnent avec le discours musical dans le cœur même des instruments. Le phénomène de retour acoustique (larsen) est exploité, contrôlé, tantôt déployé dans sa dimension sauvage, tantôt intégré comme élément expressif.

Feed the Monster is a groundbreaking experimental work that explores the piano as a living entity, metaphorically referred to as a 'monster.' The instrument behaves almost like a sentient being, capable of swallowing the external sounds, digesting them, and ultimately spitting them out in a new, reimagined form. The interplay between the piano and the five spatialised musicians of the ensemble creates a captivating dialogue wherein each sound contributes to a larger narrative that blurs the lines between composition and improvisation. This spontaneous living energy resonates throughout the images that seize the material and immaterial nature of sound within an immersive twilight atmosphere.

Spectres d’ombre (pour trio avec piano) explore les rapports entre timbre et vibration, et développe le souffle en tant que matière, élément fluctuant, dynamique, voire percussif. Un travail sur la perception – explorant par exemple l’ambigüité entre respiration humaine et souffle instrumental - associé à une écriture chorégraphique des gestes musicaux (explorant notamment l’impact visuel des techniques et modes de jeu étendus) propose une continuité au delà du son, à travers une poétique musicale de l’avant et de l’après. L’intégration de la vibration (exploration "physique", jeu sur les frottements et battements obtenus par le souffle et renforcés par l’accordage micro-tonal des cordes) et de la résonance (travail sur sa génération et son contrôle) complète cette approche.

Cette œuvre a reçu le prix André Jolivet 2017, et a été sélectionnée comme finaliste pour les ISCM World Music Days 2018.

Spectres d’ombre explores the interactions between Souffle (air/movement), gesture and resonance. The use of the instruments’ bodies - “reinforced” here by a micro-tonal tuning of the strings - allows multiple spectral/harmonic combinations to create complex textures made of souffle, frequencies, air, resonance... The work also explores the "choreographic" impact of extended techniques. Two "cadenza" (cello and piano) develop spectacular "double gestures": pizzicati in front and behind the fingers, playing with the opening and closing of the keyboard cover. Souffle is ultimately developed towards a vocal-instrumental dialogue in which sounds and voices are merged. As the work ends, the silent gestures of the performers remain the only element.

This work was awarded the 2017 “Prix André Jolivet” and selected for the 2018 ISCM world music days (French section).

‘Hólos’ (Ancient Greek ὅλος) is open to multiple interpretations. It refers to the presence and interdependence of all the parts as a ‘Whole’ (a total), transcending the mere sum of all the parts. ‘Hólos’ may refer to the ‘body in its entirety’ as well as the ‘Altogether’ working as a system – here the Whole.  In sacred writings, ‘Hólos’ may also describe the ‘wholeness’ or the ‘to be made whole’, i.e. the actions of restoration and healing.   

Inspired by these interpretations, the piece explores air (souffle) as a form of energy and complex physical and acoustic phenomenon of which every single (micro-) aspect impacts the whole resulting sound and texture. Throughout the work, the various individual instrumental forms of air merge and become a whole body, a ‘metabolism’ of sound that creates a wider textural element. Textures become circulating ‘hybrid’ masses that are developed as flux and forces, using the energy of air (souffle) to create a system based on its multiplicity (‘Hólos’). 

Respiration acts as a multilevel parameter. The inhalation-exhalation alternation principle (and associated tension-rest) ‘irrigates’ the work: it generates movements, energies, and articulations and phrases; it generates the structure, integrating friction as a tool that emerges to form a second core element (‘waves’ of air) that become embedded within the very process of respiration.

Hólo(s) pour ensemble s’attache à explorer une apparente contradiction : la fragilité du souffle instrumental, et son association, récurrente en art, religion et philosophie, avec les notions de flux, force et énergie. L’œuvre bâtit un système d’orchestration utilisant la granulation et la friction de manière systématique pour construire un métabolisme – un « tout » (« Hólos ») dont la masse génère un mouvement constant, une énergie : un « flux » de respiration. La forme de l’œuvre elle-même (micro et macro structure) est bâtie sur l’alternance d’inhalation et exhalation, explorant la double association entre air et friction. La configuration de l’ensemble évolue peu à peu à travers l’espace, formant des « polarités résonantes ».

Cette œuvre utilise un système de « pédale étendue ». Spécialement conçu, il permet au musicien de contrôler précisément l’action de la pédale de droite sur les côtés/autour du piano. La résonance sympathique est ici à la fois générée et contrôlée par un seul et même musicien. La vibration (des objets vibrateurs, créant des résonances riches, sont placés dans le piano et contrôlés à distance par un second musicien caché dans le public) crée un espace fait de "traces" sonores, autour de situations - tantôt musicales, tantôt théâtrales - qui exploitent différentes polarités résonantes à travers le souffle.

Un eco di Soffio, pour deux violoncelles, prend pour base trois techniques idiomatiques du jeu des instruments à corde (tremolo, bariolages, glissandi) de manière à en extraire « l’écho » de souffle, le timbre/grain complexe issu du frottement et contact entre l’archet/les mains et l’instrument. Ces trois techniques et gestes idiomatiques, profondément ancrés dans la pratique traditionnelle classique des cordes, sont ici envisagés sous un jour différent, leur utilisation et nouvelles caractéristiques aux « limites » du souffle et du son devenant matériau premier. L’œuvre inclut plusieurs passages d’improvisations guidées, dans lesquels les interprètes s’écoutent, se devinent, et réagissent mutuellement dans un univers sonore parfois proche du silence.

Souffles enlacés (2019) for Nay

Martin Loridan is a composer and Professor at the Royal Conservatoire of Brussels.

His works are regularly performed in Europe and beyond by internationally renowned performers such as Claude Delangle, Rohan de Saram, the Arditti Quartet, the ensembles Klangforum Wien, Fractales, Mise-en. His work has been awarded prestigious international prizes, such as the Reinl Foundation Prize (Vienna), the André Jolivet Prize (Paris), the Vareler Prize (Berlin).

He graduated from the Paris Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique (CNSM) where he obtained four prizes in harmony, counterpoint, fugue and forms, and 20th/21st-century composition. He is currently completing a PhD at the University of Leeds, UK, thanks to prestigious academic grants and awards such as the Stanley Burton Research Scholarship and the Leeds Doctoral Scholarship. He is also the recipient of the Art Research Fund (Fonds de la recherche en Arts FRArt) by the National Fund for Scientific Research, Belgium (FNRS).

His doctoral research is an investigation into air and breath (‘souffle’) as a composition material. His research has led him to the study of traditional music (Villa Salammbô residence with the support of the French Institute in Tunis) and the development of new instrumental hybridizations: extended pedal system renewing the possibilities of the piano; works for the Naylute, a new hybrid instrument between the Arabic Nay and the Western flute; application of electric guitar pedalboards systems to other instruments such as the accordion. In these different contexts, he could develop the main axes of his research: the 'tactility' of breath (souffle) and its double human and instrumental resonance; the porosity of air (as a sound material) and its development within orchestral forces and electronic expansions in amplified works.
