The nose is truly a work of art. First the classic peaty smoke but so distinctly understated. Confident in it's maturity. The salty pineapple citrus is next coupled with a refined lemon-lime toffee tartness. And finally a whiff of fresh cucumber sprinkled with the loveliest of white pepper. Oh, yes. This is what we’ve been waiting for!

The creamy mouthfeel is laced with intense black peppers but then mellows out to give you honey, lemon and chocolate with a dash of tobacco.

The long peppery finish is fruity with a hint of limestone.

Compiled by If Music's figurehead Jean-Claude and Adrian Magrys - founder of the London based Polish label Lanquidity Records (Bogowie, Contemporary Noise Quintet, Speakers Corner Quartet) - the six tracks span infectious Polish disco grooves (Wojciech Karolak and Andrzej Korzyński); bustling break-heavy jazz from the Polski Jazz Ensemble and the Russian-born "Prince Igor" Yahilevich; heartwarming spiritual jazz stylings from Hungary's Binder Quintet feat. John Tchicai; and Alojz Bouda's awesome oddball Slovakian synth banger 'Random' from 1980 also features.

"Adrian is known to If Music not only for being a customer and a supplier of quality contemporary jazz, but he is also one of a small handful of world-class go-to peeps when it comes to Eastern European music" explains Jean-Claude. "When the idea for the compilation was originally mooted, and before I had even thought about which direction this album was going to take, I knew that Adrian had to be involved."

In early 2008, age 18, Space Dimension Controller (R&S, Clone, Royal Oak) made his first album in his bedroom in Belfast, now set for a release on 27th May 2016 via Ninja Tune. Crunchy, tattered and enjoyably odd - “Orange Melamine” is a lovingly produced and deeply personal album that laces supernatural sounds and translucent synths with a sense of overflowing harmony. Washed in reverb and draped in hiss, the album draws influence from the old VHS tapes handed down to Space Dimension Controller from his older brother and cousins, as well as artists like Boards of Canada, Brian Eno and William Basinski. 

The album is also steeped in audio and visual references from 80’s and 90’s sci-fi films and animations; from The Guyver, Short Circuit, The Gobots, and Ghostbusters through to The Fifth Element, Escape from New York and Power Rangers - also reflected in the album's visual identity created by Jacob Chabeaux.

I got a call from Miles Leonard (President of Parlophone EMI Virgin) to talk about a project of Blur's Damon Albarn. It was called Gorillaz. Not a band as such, more of a collective of collaborators. They had inadvertently caught some heat, by way of a 2-Step Garage Remix of "Clint Eastwood". BBC Radio 1 weren't giving the original a lot of spins and decided (to keep in with its core audience) to do a radio edit of this popular dance mix. Since this version wasn't representative of what Gorillaz were about, EMI & Albarn initially weren't keen but relented to public demand. I was given a copy of all their demo's and unfinished/finished tracks for what was to be their debut album. The brief was "pick one that you can produce, remix or whatever into a hit single". I gave them all a listen and, nothing immediately screamed 'potential hit'. Regardless, I sent over a proposed budget for one song of their choosing. Things went quiet for a few weeks or so. I then got a call a few weeks later saying "Jamie Howlett has already started working on a video for the song "19-2000" - we'd really love it if you took that song and made into a hit". To my ears, it was a ropey durgy old demo lacking a great melody, let alone a big hook. After striking a deal with Miles, I agreed to do it. The fee (including production recording/mixing costs) wasn't what I wanted but he said "I promise I will make it up to you on another record". Well, 15 years later... He never did keep his promise! As far as creativity was concerned,  his exact words were "you have carte blanche to do whatever you want". What happened next was nightmare-ish 10 days....  [MORE TO FOLLOW]
