Many people unfortunately these days think of the Faroe Islands as a country that kills whales by barbarians dressed as Vikings! It is however not the case, whaling is on the decline. I want to show you the beauty of the islands through sound. This is one morning at around 06:00am out on a lonely spit in unforgiving wind. You can hear terns and oystercatchers as they try desperately to hold on to the thermals as they maneuver these difficult gusts.

“This recording is based on a particular geographic area of Sydney: the industrial zone around Sydenham Train station. As with many inner city industrial areas in large cities all over the western world, this place is ripe for redevelopment. However, in this case, due to the zone being directly underneath the flight path to Sydney airport, as well as being flood prone due to environmental factors, unscrupulous property developers are not able to completely gut the place and erect hideous apartments. What is interesting to me, and what this recording aims to capture, is that these factors – the aeroplanes and the puddles – act as a form of resistance to the development.” (MP Hopkins) 

MP Hopkins is a hidden treasure from Australia, a sound artist known for his varied music projects and strange mix of lo-fi urban field recordings and intimate bedroom experiments. Sonic details of empty streets from close neighbourhood, subtle intervention and fragments of lonely voice comments are reminding distinctive forms of sound journalism or a diary for night adventurers. Aeroplanes & Puddles follows the previous Traipse - Marrickville (2015) album which is Hopkins's starting point for his walks along the Sydney suburb. 

Mappa presents the sonic evidence of this opposition; the non-human voices of resistance that the aeroplanes and water speak with in this acoustic environment. The work features field recordings of the area garnished with a text narrated by Hopkins which combines fragments of the 2017 Australian Federal Budget speech and parts of ‘The Powerhouse’ – a radio play by Richard Packer (Gargoyle Poets series, 1972).”Feel free floating in the holy sound voyeurism and thorough collection of evidence from the other world at the same time.

Live at the Fernandes House, World Listening Day 2021

The Serengeti ecosystem is a geographical region in Africa, spanning northern Tanzania. The protected area within the region includes approximately 30,000 km² of land, including the Serengeti National Park and several game reserves.
The insect chorus ends at the crack of dawn and the birds get into their positions to sing in the morning. As the cooler morning air is warmed by the rising sun, Birds sing to each other to basically find out who made it through the night and are there any new arrivals. Its like a news broadcast in 30 different languages.
There is a little distant traffic noise that can be heard so I did filter out some of the lows....

Serengeti Morning

Dawn around 05:00. The first calls of the Song Sparrow waking up and then into their typical dawn song. Spring has sprung in the Pacific Northwest.
Also heard: Spotted Towhee, Dark-eyed Junco, American Robin.

Awarded the Phonurgia-Nova-Prize 2008 and a mention at the 35th International Competition of Electroacoustic Music and Sonic Art in Bourges 2008.

"The sound compositions fire pattern (2007) and frost pattern (2006) describe the extremes of hot and cold. Almost identical in terms of their formal structure, the twin pieces reflect the acoustic impact of the energies unleashed by fire and ice, from the loudest sound event in each case – the eruption of a volcano and the collision of an iceberg – through to cooling or melting in a more moderate temperature range."

Howler Monkeys Predawn

After a warm day in Redmond, Washington a cold front came in and soon followed torrential rain and thunder.
Microphones placed in the woods with a 200 foot run to the mics.
A rainman protected the microphones.
Listen to the birds after the rains passed through.

At the side of a lake in Madagascar, You can hear the madagascar cuckoo's constant call as the insects bite the living daylights out of me. Birds here include a host of vangas including Van Dam's, Sickle-billed, White-headed and Hook-billed, Torotoroka Scops Owl, Grey-headed Love-bird and Coquerel's and Red-capped couas.

I don't know about you but I absolutely love the sound of the bullfrog!
This is the sound of Stossel Creek, a place I have recorded for many years now, it is around 01:30 am, the moon shines on the ponds that are home to waterfowl, amphibians, mammals and an abundance of birds.
On this early morning, the grunts of the bullfrog and the croaks of the Pacific Chorus frogs can be heard for miles.

Early morning in the Sonoran Desert, this is a section just after first light. The white-winged doves are calling through the morning air, Cactus wrens, Gila woodpeckers, cardinals and all, announce the day.

Dawn in the Sonoran Desert

It is early morning before sunrise. Mother nature has been pounding the rocks on her coastline all night and just at first light, she stretches out with her power and thrashes the rocks one more time. This is a recording of her ocean along the pacific coastline just north of Cabo San Lucas.
