Free Cells Drinking The Medium

This piece is a response to an eerily captivating piece of interference microscopy footage from 1958 that I came across by chance in the Wellcome Collection.

On surface level, the film is a very clinical document of normal and cancerous cells. However, the longer I looked at these alien shapes floating in a blue void, the more abstract and visually captivating the images became, like a moving painting with distinct edges blurred by the warmth of grainy film. The rich colour palette of the footage and its fluttering, pulsating, sometimes jarring movements are sonically reflected in the piece’s microtonal harmony, rhythmic fluidity and blurred instrumental identity. As the name–taken from a title card in the film–alludes, I visualise the often fleeting, unstable musical material that jumps between the players as emerging and retreating into in its own dark liquid medium.

'Quattro Stagioni' (2016) is a 21st-century response to the idea behind Vivaldi's 'Four Seasons', as seen through the lens of American artist Cy Twombly's major work from the 1990s, 'Quattro Stagioni'. My 'Quattro Stagioni' consists of four concerto-type movements: each of the four violinists has their own focal movement, where the other three act as the 'ripieno' group. The character of each movement is inspired by one of Twombly's 'Quattro Stagioni' paintings. This work is a meditation on the cyclical nature of life and as such is full of colour, texture and emotion.

The work was commissioned by Music Network and the performers on this recording are Mia Cooper, Katherine Hunka, Ioana Petcu-Colan and Helena Wood.

At this time in quarantine, I started to regularly go to the sea front within 2 km of my home. I was at this particular place almost every day with my kids when they were babies, many years ago. We were quite isolated from the rest of the world then. So I remember this feeling. I’m revisiting the time I was going into the uncharted territory in my life - finding the happiness in simple things while grieving for the old way. 
We are in a tunnel that connects two worlds, from the end of the old one to the beginning of unknown. In that case this is a lullaby for the old world.

'Cobh - to the Island' is a piece Mary Barnecutt. It features sounds taken from Cobh, a town in County Cork, and its environs (including Spike Island), interwoven with composed melodies and dense, overlapping string harmonies. The instrumentation includes audio recordings, shruti box, sampled foghorn, cellos, and vocals. Barnecutt created the piece while in residence at SIRIUS in 2020.

Commissioned by SIRIUS, Cobh, County Cork, with the support of Cork County Council.
