This song was written by an old Blues player named Lead Belly. Later on it was recorded by Led Zeppelin. I always liked singing this song, about a guy who was going to hang unless he could persuade or payoff the "Hangman" with gold, silver, or other means. This is my own version taylor'ed after Zeppelins rendition. Enjoy.

3. Midnight Sun Blues - A blues song that ties the North to the Delta-South. Cairo is at the bottom tip of Illinois, related to the South but in a Midwest state. The Midnight Sun would be somewhere in the cold north. Escape is what the song is about, but escape to what? Where? This song has 5 tracks and includes my Teisco ET200 and the Silvertone. The lead was played through a small Fender Pro Jr. The vocal sung on my telephone microphone. Homemade with duct tape! Done on the 8-track.

Seems some guy had left the bar in wintertime, trudging through the woods rather than driving home drunk. They found his body the next morning... So, here I am drunk in the bar for 14 days 'cause my baby gone, afraid to drive, afraid to walk... So call me a cab!  Great harmonies, David and Joe!

(c) Dale Anderson, 2012.  I wrote this song, 'There Goes the 400' at my brother, Neil's house. It's about that C&NW train, my grandfather. Erling Hackelberg, and my brother, Neil & me. This is and will remain the acoustic version. Perhaps I will embellish the song for the future album. Considerations for album title are 'Last Stand' and 'True Stories from My Fictitious Life'.

In verse one I was probably 4-5 years old and my Grandpa was still working, that's why it was late afternoon, after he'd returned from work. Steam engines were still in service at that time although I don't know if they pulled passenger cars any longer, but I did hear the whistle blow back in the early to mid 50's.

Verse two deals with my trip to Chicago in June of 1965 to go to my brother Neil's graduation from high school in Wheaton IL. He'd spent that last year with cousin Lambert Anderson's family. I remember so well, stepping to the door of the double-decker and seeing him walking down the platform looking for me.

The final verse deals with the passing of time and how the years slip away. When I wrote the words, my brother and I really were getting old and turning gray. My grandpa's been gone 51 years at the time of this writing, and my brother, who loved this song has been gone five days. Years slip away...
