WALKING THROUGH THE SUBMERGED FOREST

This piece is composed from my field recordings and readings of letters from Bexhill Museum archives, layered to bring to life a part of our eroding coastline and an archive which lies quietly unearthed. 
The field recordings were made whilst walking at low tide through pre-historic submerged forest remains, at Bulverhythe in EastSussex. This is layered with field recordings made in nearby woods.

Julian Porter, Rother Museums' curator found photographs and letters in the Bexhill Museum archives relating to the forest, which Actor and Theatre Producer Leigh Shine, read for me in a recording session. 
I hope the piece creates a spirit of place, a sense of timelessness and ever evolving change. The magical experience of walking through thousands of years of human and environmental ebb and flow.

Walking through the submerged forest

The legendary and wonderful Pete the Pond met me in February at Hampden Park Pond to talk about the wonderful biodiversity and history of Hampden Park Pond and waterways. He shares his passion forcring for the environment through the generation and restoration of ponds and the flora and fauna that colonise a healthy pond and water way and how important that is for us all. The soundscape is recorded in and around the pond and you will also hear Pete's parrot, who accompanies him on field trips, contributing to the commentary.
This piece has been made as a commissioned work for the Blue Heart Project for Wealden and Eastbourne a flood mitigation programme of works over a six year period up to 2027.
The Blue Heart project is building a library of inspiring audio that
relates to themes of climate change, flooding, water in
the environment, the Eastbourne and south Wealden community, and care for blue spaces.

The wonder of pond life with Pete The Pond

À l’aube,
Un petit duc sonne la cloche du village et réveille les rossignols,
Solo de mobylette qui dessine le paysage,
Un bourdon drague un saxophone,
L’eau capricieuse se fraie un chemin jusqu’au vignoble d’un mélomane, 
Le boulanger guette le vent…
Au commencement était le son.

Le Chòt

This recording was made on May 6th 2023 for Reveil 10 from Civil twilight at 4.44am to 5.30 am and hopefully captures the transition from night to day, and how the sounds  of the wildlife and humans interact and build. It begins with me making tea, going into to the garden to listen to the first sounds of the waking wildlife in the twilight hours, building to a crescendo and then being subsumed by the sounds of human activity. We should still hear however the insect and bird notes above the waves of humans going about their business in cars and buses, and perhaps the occasional dog walkers. 
The human activity builds and wanes as the wildlife does, but it is less enchanting as it is machine sound. The birds are very varied, crows, magpies, robins, blue tits, an owl if we are lucky, seagulls, sparrows,  pigeons, wrens, and more. We let the garden have wild patches and we see several species of bees, wasps, hover flies, butterflies, frogs, moths and many small insects, slugs and snails of course.
The house was built in 1908 and has a long garden. It was until 1940 a quiet road with fields, woodland surrounding it and natural springs running through it. Now  all around us is densely developed and the road in front of the house has become the main traffic route into Hastings, due to poor town planning decisions, carrying giant delivery trucks and a constant stream of traffic to and fro. As a consquence the houses are shaken to their foundations and the roads and services beneath are constantly in need of repair. Luckily we have an extensive ribbon of public park to alleviate pollution and provide a green lung for the town.
The witching hour of transition from day to night and night to day is a very beautiful experience and it is wonderful to shre it with all my fellow streamers.

Reveil 2023 Eden

Hex is an emerging sonic organism that develops the acoustic and electronic sounds. The music originates from the magical elements and the supernatural aspect represented by the figure of the three witches who prophesy Macbeth's fate. This electro-acoustic composition was generated by repeated structured improvisations that became a defined live performance. The dramaturgy structure is divided into 5 sound frameworks focused on a real-time transformation of acoustic sounds of drums and percussions through extended live electronics technique.

The Oldest Living Linden Tree in the Germany (Registered in the Guinness Record Book) I made Biodata Recordings at the beginning of the August this year. I was pretty much busy this year with Biodata Recordings (from various Trees Linden, Olive, Spruce, .. and other plants like Tomatoes, Violet Roses, ..) I realized how signals of older plants like this one have generated arrangements with deeper consciousness, when we listen to final results as sound compositions at the end. i recorded in July 700 years younger Linden Tree (also those recordings were special in its own unique way), but this one I fell like a symphony of a good classical musician from the 19th century.

Grow takes us back to Elektrotropolis, but this time he's not alone. The Return to Elektrotropolis delivers 4 new remixes of the dystopian electro originals crafted by CHP crew members and a Dub mix of the original single by Grow. The ep begins with Mark Starr's reinvented version of the title track smothered in his signature style yet peppered with some 90's rave vibes. The ep then slides into 'Interdimensional Telepathy' through the lens of electro wizard Fleck E.S.C. who delivers a vibey and creative interpretation filled with energy and complex sonic textures. Then Cyborg Rhetoric arrives straight out of the Pangeria Galaxy to deliver a belter of a remix of 'Biological Mycelial Network' with slamming bass, a driving sequence, and floor filling electro energy. Ekata's remix of 'Secret Machines' is next up delivering a completely new hypnotic take on the original with dreamy synthwork and exciting re-sequenced vocal edits. The Return to Elektrotropolis ends with a dub mix of the title track made by Grow that will provide DJ's with a sneaky way to re-insert the tune into their sets.

Biological Mycelial Network (Cyborg Rhetoric Remix)

"Subterranean Sky" - a 2002 collaboration between sculptor george deMerle and composer Scott Gibbons - is a spacial environment that defies everyday perceptions of mass, form and time. An incredibly strong yet lightweight plastic, originally developed by deMerle using materials from NASA, is the medium used to create delicate fabrics of a proposed alternate reality.

The first to propose putting art into space*, deMerle sculpts light out of darkness with this webbing to create environments which seem to defy gravity. In fact, a recent deMerle piece which was so large as to fill an aircraft hangar weighed only 1 lb total, suspended. deMerle is best known as a political activist who fights for civil liberties, and for many decades he was considered an Outsider artist. But his art is a natural extension of his politics, which celebrates the necessity of personal expression for self-actualization.

Gibbons' original audio score is incorporated directly into the piece, directed through speakers that are integrated into deMerle's ethereal sculpture.

Although this is their first collaboration, deMerle and Gibbons have been close friends since the mid-80's, and in many ways Gibbons' work with audio is the sonic equivalent of deMerle's webbed designs; both of which often suggest more than they reveal.

* Although the NEA was very excited to back this project in 1977, they were ultimately unable to do so as there was no category for this kind of proposal.

I record Oral history as part of the work I do and use it with soundscape to create work that evokes 'genius loci' streaming together timelines, memories, and events.
