Dawn Soundscape at Ovre Kärret

Tawny owls bid farewell to the night, as the first songsters begin to call. This moment just before the first songs begin has sometimes been referred as First Blush. The forest acoustic space goes from relative silence to full symphony in the space of a few minutes, recorded here for International Dawn Chorus Day 2025.

The crackling sound is not rain (or fire!) but honey dew, I believe. Would love your thoughts on that.

Last Cry of the Night

Immerse yourself in the enchanting soundscape of a French forest at dawn, recorded in the heart of the Foret Dominale du Perche et de la Trappe. The most prominent bird song is that of the Wood Warbler, but we also hear Eurasian Wren, Common Cuckoo, Common Chaffinch, Eurasian Blackbird, European Robin, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Song Thrush, Common Firecrest and Common Wood-Pigeon.

A long recording of a Common Whitethroat in song on a windy morning at Sandemar Reserve, Sweden. A nice ambience here from the wind through vegetation, whilst a Skylark sings in the background. Recorded with a Tascam FR-AV2 and matched pair of Sennheiser 8020 microphones.

This is an edit of a field recording of the Dawn Chorus. It was recorded near Cincinnati, Ohio, in a wooded area of a friend's back yard. 

Dawn Chorus 5/19/25 5:33 AM - Jordan Road, Cleves, Ohio

After being in Soomaa National Park.  The people in 'Soomaa Holiday village' (dot com) were really good and the guy even drove me to a town called Viljandi, this was nearer to Tartu than starting the bus journey in Parnu.  So I would like to say a big thankyou to those kind people.  I had planned to get a bus across to Tartu and out to Palupohja in the Alam Pedja Reserve, to see the old place and say hello.  I had planned three nights there.  There was a large group staying in the Nature School so I stayed in the other house down near the sauna house.   On one of the evenings I got to meet up with my friend and fellow bird recordist Andrus Kannel.  Two of the mornings were a bit damp, however in the evenings I was able to record the evening chorus without mosquitos spoiling the sound - they sound somewhat like 'brown' noise.   My thanks to Robert for bringing me out to Palupohja and back to Tartu.  I think evening choruses have a magical other worldly quality, a bit melancholic but beautiful.  I love how the many tree trunks blur the sound. Recording 4436.


Dawn Chorus (2) 13 May 2025-4.47am - Sauna House, Palupohja

A long soundscape of the dawn chorus at Sandemar Reserve in Sweden. Many species can be heard in this recording, predominantly Chaffinch, Garden Warbler, Common Crane and Wood Pigeon. In the background there are many others, such as Thrush Nightingale, Blue tit, Tree Pipit, Blackcap, Greylag Goose, Eurasian Treecreeper and others. This recording was made with a Wildlife Acoustics SM Mini automated recorder, which was placed at the site for a week long deployment. I have been using these devices extensively in 2025 and they have allowed me to obtain some wonderful audio in a wide range of habitats. I have found the audio quality to be perfectly good, as you will hear in this recording...

DAWN CHORUS REMAKE

This is a recent field recording from Halifax, PA. The recording was collected from near Dividing Ridge on an unpaved and overgrown township road. Locals might recognize the site as being near a former water wheel on the Brown Farm. Listening through headphones is highly encouraged.

A cabinetmaker by trade.  I have been recording birds for over 42 years.  Even as a seven year old I loved to hear the sound of birds. 
I believe that birdsong is a perfect reflection of the natural environment and yet a part of the experience of the environment.  
Over the years I have made some wildlife films and videos.  For wildlife recording I have been around Ireland, Wales, Finland, Estonia, Sweden, Belize, Guyana, Brazil, Peru and Costa Rica. At the moment I have 26 albums of birdsong/nature, most of which can be found here for free download in high quality F.L.A.C. format.
