Thousand of sand fleas (talitrus saltator) were eating a large jellyfish on the beach at Oleron island (France). We put 2 hydrophones inside to listen. We can hear the fleas jumping around but also the waves from the inside perspective of the jellyfish.

Recorded with 2 Aquarian H2a on a Mixpre 6-II with Grégoire Chauvot at Oleron island in 2022.

This seismic electronica composition by Ryan McGee is transposed from data collected from the July 4th and 5th, 2019, Ridgecrest earthquake sequences. The Mw6.4 earthquake was focused at a depth 10.7km beneath the China Lake Naval Air Center and occurred at 10:33am local time and was felt in Los Angeles and Las Vegas. This strike slip event was a foreshock to the later Mw7.1 event which occurred thirty four hours later at 8.19pm local time on the July 5th, 2019.

This example of seismic electronica explores timbral variety within the tenets of audification: using only granular time-stretching, re-pitching, resampling, and filtering. The goal is to focus on the sonic qualities present in seismic data without parameter mapping to control arbitrary sound generators. Repeating identical audification paradigms while varying the source of the data (i.e. the seismic station) explores timbral differences between propagation to various seismometers at surrounding geographic locations. 

Subtle modulations and time/frequency intervals are used to musify this collage of seismic waveforms, but the emphasis is on sound timbre over musical composition. All sounds generated in MATLAB from IRIS Wilber data and sequenced in Ableton Live.
