"This Slumber Session mix gave me a great opportunity to make a playlist of something I would want to listen to when unwinding, or to just fall asleep to. I wanted it to be able to exist in the background, without focus, whilst at the same time having elements of detail and beauty scattered amongst the layers of sound unravelling as the mix progresses.

In some ways you can think of it as a soundtrack to a dream. There are moments of calm flowing smoothly into more abstract sections. Textures build to go from sparse emotive landscapes to darker, brooding moments of tension. I wanted it to be dynamic, taking in a variety of styles and influences, whilst giving the listener a coherent experience and painting some interesting images in their minds.

It also gave me the chance to put in a lot of unreleased tracks of mine. I make a wide variety of styles outside of my normal output, so it was great to have an outlet for some of that material. There are also a lot of field recordings I've made over the last few years throughout the mix, including some from my travels. The opening section of music features the sounds of walks in Sydney and San Francisco, which at the time was just some subconscious grabbing of sound recordings without any kind of artistic purpose - it just sounded cool at the time. It seemed fitting when I realised where the sounds were from, as the mix would have been the perfect playlist for a lot of my sleep deprived travels.

I ended up getting so involved putting together this mix that there's a lot of live tweaks of outboard reverb and delay units layered on certain tracks to try and get the sense of space I wanted to achieve and give the mix some breathing space. I find that ambient music can be incredibly beautiful and achieve the range of emotions other music can. I hope that you enjoy the musical selection and can immerse yourself in it, even with the emphasis away from the hooks and rhythms of traditional electronic dance music."

Slumber Session: Phaeleh

The sound of dreamland this week comes from a collaborative effort between multi instrumentalist and producer William Yates aka Memotone and Glasgow via Brighton based Soroosh Khavari aka Soosh. The pair have are set to release their atmospheric yet perfectly musical, Memoosh LP on Monday 6th October via Project Mooncircle and now deliver your mid-week lullaby exclusively for i-D. Memtone delivers the first insomnia-battling 31 minutes, followed by a meditative ending courtesy of Soosh. Press play and drift away.

There are enough imaginative ideas in the first half of the mix to tire your brain out, walking across the many wonderful and stange landscapes of your inner environment, before slowing lowering you into the deeper, more solidly rooted, sleep enducing tones. However, I feel it would be a shame to actually fall asleep as there is just as much to pay attention too in the latter half of the mix. This week we delve into the dreamworld of Lost Twin. Making music that flickers between the deeper realms of electronic production with cinematic spectral pads and weighty hip hop-esq beats. Having just dropped his incredible album The Mist, the Spanish producer delves into the mix with a hypnotic blend of dream inducing beats. Drift off.

"To me, the following selection of music could be described as psychedelic, without making distinctions in genres or BPM’s. Some of these songs may be dream-inducing, some of them nightmare-inducing, but they all bring me a certain feeling of unreality, as if they were snapshots of altered landscapes or distorted memories. It can also be thought of as the soundtrack for an initiation to psychonautics. One way or another, it is music that I find deeply enjoyable no matter what altered state you're in."

Slumber Session: Lost Twin

Bassist and composer Joseph Franklin returns to NM for a wildstyle heat exchange, actioned live in collaboration with synthesist, composer and improviser Ben Carey. Modestly, this one does what it says on the box, however ‘a thousand tiny mutinies live’ revises motifs and prompts from Franklin’s solo bass and extended technique LP for NM in 2024 with spectacular license, captured in stunning high resolution audio.

Surrounded by an encircling audience, Franklin’s fragmented acoustic cycles issued from an array of instruments and sources were splayed across 4 channels at Brunswick’s Quadraphonic Club via Carey’s impressively restrained synthesis, software interaction and live engineering, mixed down to stereo for this release. The duo’s staggering meshes lurch from blistering to elongated and back again, often as tactile as they are psychically liquefied, both performances rippling at each other’s wide-eyed interpolations.

Quantitively, mere sinews of the original work flit in and out of focus, yet these strands are most noticeable even to those with a cursory familiarity with ‘a thousand tiny mutinies’. Carey’s attention to detail and care in the mix actively places Franklin’s performance in sharpest focus, re-nesting these percussive, often inter-tonal molecules into a realm of digital faceting, dragging their shared rationale into the cosmological. 

Frightening in its unpredictable objectives, this rare capture of a duo in such gleaming, inspired symbiosis does not strike so often.

The Richard Lawson debut classical work with Acacia String Quartet ‘How To Read a City, Your Place of Last Resort’ is out now on all streaming platforms. In early 2025, the single, ‘On Love Lost Days’ was featured on the Australian Art Music playlist in ABC Limelight magazine and has since been added to ABC Classic FM playlistings. Performed by the Acacia Quartet, the recording took place at the iconic Four Winds Pavilion on the South Coast of NSW. Collaborating for the first time, How To Read A City, Your Place of Last Resort was performed by Acacia Quartet, after a period of extensive score development with Elizabeth Walton.
