Hoshina Anniversary - Gekokujo [CLIPP201]

Following two striking EPs and a full length album through Lovefingers' excellent ESP Institute label, techno innovator Hoshina Anniversary arrives on clipp.art with the intensely adventurous “Gekokujo”. A brief debrief of the Tokyo-based DJ & producer shows him turning out fascinating music for over a decade, journeying through abstract techno, experimental deep house and drone-core. Sonic voyages that always explore the boundaries of the Japanese musical scale, with more than a few bangers as a result.

Gekokujo the term itself roughly translates to "the low overcomes the high" and the three movements of the release itself create a swirling cauldron of contrasts. Gekokujo and Gekokujo II find Hoshina Anniversary at home with his self-styled 'watechno' sound - infusing electronic fundamentals with jazz sensibilities and subtle Japanese aesthetics. Dueling tracks laden with audio contrast, meandering crunchy stabs, wilding out LFO’s, clashing percussive time signatures, rising arpeggiated motifs and dystopian breakdowns, all stepped against clanging 4/4 high hats. Kaguya Hime (either influenced by the titular character from Studio Ghibli film The Tale of the Princess Kaguya or 10th century Japanese folklore monogatari The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter) pits wigged out circular synth sonics against a bubbling acid-y bassline before giving way to straight up Herbie Hancock expressionism. As we start to close the chapter on another year of ups and downs inside the simulacrum, we face the challenges of discerning our own groove from the melee, wondering which patterns will repeat in 2022. The low overcomes the high, only to be replaced by the low.. the cycle continues.

"Transcendental Love" is the fifth EP in two years by Hackney-based producer Fabien Guiot aka @djhoshino, who is assembling a catalogue of hypnotic, understated tracks that are subtly colorful in their production. The music on "Transcendental Love" illustrates a rising energy born out of dark confines, reflecting our patient return to clubs and nightlife all over the world, and furthermore proving London's fertile ground for the LoFi house scene. Its sounds are both industrial and delicate, aiming to return to the roots of house music in tastefully low fidelity.

Bathed in a coat of acid with a myriad of bouncing melody’s underneath, Slim Steve crafts yet another seamless banger. This Italy-based producer has gained attention from his releases on E-Beamz, Lobster Theremin’s sublabel Blood Money Club Trax, and X-Kalay, and now with this feature on TR4R compilation, he continues his reign. There is a seemingly laxed attitude towards his productions, where you can tell he just goes with his ear and doesn’t try to overthink the track, and “Untitled 3” continues down that same ethos.

Following the past releases “Rough Cuts” & TR4R 02, this new compilation continues it’s path on crafting not only absolute bangers, but covering a wide range of genres— from breaks to techno to electro, and all flavors of house. Recruiting 28 artists from around the world, such as DOS, Slim Steve, Peer Du, Tommy Vicari Jnr just to name a few, there is no mistaking the prowess of production level here. Arguably, the most ambitious ‘Cuts’ thus far, the appeal to any taste is delivered here. Take Etur Usheo’s breaks anthem “XTC Groove,” or Clocked Devices’ electro punisher “Grow Box,” there is nothing left uncovered here.
