Lèspri Ka, Pt 2 (Gwoka special)

A real legend of the game! Jean Philippe Marthély has a huge discography, and since 1981 has been part of the legendary zouk band Kassav'!

The influence of this super-group on music not only in the Caribbean, but also across West Africa and beyond cannot be overstated. The pioneering collective of incredible Antillean musicians basically founded the zouk genre, and Jean Philippe has been a choice vocalist for decades.

This edit I dedicate to my grandmother Lulu. With the title and vocals to me sounding like "To Lulu" especially in the call response chorus, this was immediately the first thought that came to mind. Just like this track she had incredible positive energy and was a force to be reckoned with, may she rest in peace. Thank you to Hunee for the continued inspiration!

we are very much excited to support this re-issue, credited by jacob f. desvarieux, a composer and also well known as the guitarist of kassav - the only-one band which continually embodies the word ”zouk" for last few decades.   a1 is the tune showing us psychedelic guitar phrases fused together with wobbling heavy synthesizer. you’d better hurry to get the copy for this song, since this is just simply a killer. besides it, a2 is also a tropical danceable tune with moving bass and impressive vocoder chorus, makes everyone literally "emotional" on the floor. 

kuniyuki joins with more deep spacey re-edit on the b side, probably we need few words to describe this man in our bio because of his right craftsmanship.
following re-issue could be expected from us in near future. grab one and find yourself in caribbean exotica!

The A side features 'Lizo' by Eugène Mona, an essential figure in the folkloric music of Martinique based on the bamboo flute, bèlè drums, and the island's specific variant of Antillean creole.  Lizo was originally released in 1990 on Mona's Blanc Mangé Blan Manjé? LP and is anchored by frenetic percussion, a driving bassline, and house-evocative key stabs. Mona's flute kicks off the tune which then jumps right into a call-and response vocal barrage. In the lyrics, Mona warns a local political figure to watch his back because he's surrounded by an untrustworthy crew. Kiko Navarro's remix takes an already dynamic cut to deep Afro-space with thumping drums and a bubbling synth-bass groove that will put dancers through their paces.
