Metal homage to the nerve-shredding cue "Bishop's Countdown" by James Horner, which was used for the climactic moments of the movie Aliens and in many trailers in the 80's and 90's.

Agent Shifter Coulton checked the charge on his fractal blaster for the third time, pulled his anti-superposition helmet over his head, crouched on the circular steel platform, and waited. In fifteen seconds the seat of Earth’s planetary consciousness would launch his body into one of the thousand conduits it had created to communicate with other worlds. 

Rip-space.

A constriction of space-time not so much folded as pinched or shattered; a trillion overlapping micro-tesseracts allowing near-instantaneous communications between a growing number of superconsciousnesses throughout the galaxy. The planet-mind had come up with the theory and the tech, a short time after achieving sentience.

Coulton wondered if the Spanners would be there when he dropped. They always came, eventually, feeding on the exotic energies emitted by the conduits, unshattering them, turning them into dead ends. 

"Healing them," he considered. 

There was that feeling again…that maybe he, and all of Earth’s people, would never see the treasures the planet-mind had promised. Maybe it was all propaganda - another system of control, just scaled up. He could overload his blaster post-launch and kill the whole conduit, along with himself. The Deintegrationists would make him into a martyr for that. But the line would inevitably be replaced. 
He’d be replaced, too.

He braced himself for the shock of transport, his body tightening instinctually. He’d done this a hundred times, could do it blindfolded. His arms and legs moved automatically, untethered to conscious thought, and he was momentarily thankful for his years of experience and training. "But," he thought, "Maybe that’s part of the system, too."

His heads-up display pulsed red.
