Usually, my music is a means to explore the present or reflect on the past.  "Of Whats to Come" has been a project where I investigate how pushing myself to think about the future (while at the piano) impacts my improvisational style

OK, so this was probably a bad idea.   But - the soundtrack for my life story has a few covers thrown in and this is absolutely one.  

I decided to record and post this for a few reasons.  First and most significantly, it is one of my favorite songs.  Second - to acknowledge (and hopefully not insult) a band that was a massive influence on me; both as a person and as a musician.  Third - to challenge myself.

I generally try to avoid covering songs with distinct piano parts - I like to put a little of my own personality in everything I do but I don't ever want to take anything away from the original composition.  That said,  there is something about Say Something that stuck in my head when I first heard it.  When I 'met' Debbie (DLynn) here on SoundCloud and she listed some songs for consideration, Say Something immediately jumped out to me.  

It was a lot of fun working with Debbie on this track!  Make sure to stop by her page to listen to her other work - she has been developing quite an extensive collection including covers that span many genres.

A little history on this song:

"Say Something" is a song by American indie pop duo A Great Big World from their debut album, Is There Anybody Out There? (2013). Written by the duo members—Ian Axel and Chad King—alongside Mike Campbell, the song was originally recorded by Axel for his solo album This Is the New Year (2011). It was later released as a single by the duo on September 3, 2013, by Epic Records. Following its usage on American reality TV show So You Think You Can Dance, the track gained attention from singer Christina Aguilera, who wanted to collaborate with A Great Big World on the song. Quickly afterwards, a re-recorded version of "Say Something" with Aguilera was released on November 4, 2013.

Most of my recent work has been a part of the set: "Of Whats to Come".   "Of Whats to Come" is a project where I investigate how pushing myself to think about the future (while at the piano) impacts my improvisational style.  

This track, however, was a bit more present-focused.

Apparently I had a lot to get out on January 24th of 2017  because I ended up with well over a half an hour of recordings from the session.    A large portion of that session became "Journal - January 24, 2017".

This piece (Reflection - January 24, 2017) was created by listening to, reflecting on, playing with and building on parts of the 20+ minutes of music left over from that session.

Reflection - January 24, 2017

Ok, forgive me if this gets confusing but I doubt you care.   This is the third track I am posting from my recording session back on January 24th:

In terms of the order in which I recorded the set, however, this was actually the 2nd track I recorded that day.

There are definitely some repeated themes shared between this track and the others that day, but this one has a particular energy and feel which I find distinct.

My piano is my voice.  I started recording these compositions and improvisations a few years ago when I wanted to tell someone how much I love them and no words were sufficient.  In the process of writing and recording that piece, I decided to start recording my random improvisations as well (which despite having played most of my life, I've never done before).  That was the beginning of my first set, "Words Fail Me" and this page.
