Just me goofing around at the keyboard when I really should have been working on something else.  I figured, why not video tape one of my piano improvisations and embarrass myself for everyone to see?  This one turned into a bit of a story (by which I mean it is long).

Journal - January 24, 2017

Most of my recent work has been a part of the set: "Of Whats to Come".   "Of Whats to Come" is a project where I investigate how pushing myself to think about the future (while at the piano) impacts my improvisational style.  

This track, however, was a bit more present-focused.

Apparently I had a lot to get out on January 24th of 2017  because I ended up with well over a half an hour of recordings from the session.    A large portion of that session became "Journal - January 24, 2017".

This piece (Reflection - January 24, 2017) was created by listening to, reflecting on, playing with and building on parts of the 20+ minutes of music left over from that session.

Reflection - January 24, 2017

Ok, forgive me if this gets confusing but I doubt you care.   This is the third track I am posting from my recording session back on January 24th:

In terms of the order in which I recorded the set, however, this was actually the 2nd track I recorded that day.

There are definitely some repeated themes shared between this track and the others that day, but this one has a particular energy and feel which I find distinct.

  * For the record, the 3rd track recorded was 'Reflection - January 24, 2017' and the 4th was 'Journal - January 24, 2017'.   The 1st track of the set is still being edited and revised.

"Of What's to Come" is a project where I use the piano to explore the future - what lies ahead - instead of the present or past.   Unlike "Words Fail Me", in which each track captures some part of my life that has already been written, each track of "Of What's to Come" is a daydream, fantasy or  story about a part of my life that still* lies ahead.

My piano is my voice.  I started recording these compositions and improvisations a few years ago when I wanted to tell someone how much I love them and no words were sufficient.  In the process of writing and recording that piece, I decided to start recording my random improvisations as well (which despite having played most of my life, I've never done before).  That was the beginning of my first set, "Words Fail Me" and this page.
