Info: Simon Ferdinand returns to his own Polycarp Records this February with the ‘Unsigned’ EP, a four-track project of unnamed cuts designed to let the music do the talking. Since 2016 the Simon Ferdinand helmed Polycarp Records has been slowly unveiling material which meanders through genres but keeping a raw, underground aesthetic at its core.
'A1’ opens with haunting synth tones, gritty bass stabs and fluttering wooden percussion before the ‘A2’ ups the energy levels with weighty 808 drums, snaking resonant synth licks and bright leads all dynamically evolving throughout. ‘A3’ then turns things up a notch further with twitchy metallic synth, heavily saturated drums, snappy snare drums and airy atmospherics and intricately delayed synth melodies. ‘A4’ then concludes the EP, stripping things back to a more raw, reduced state as smooth pads, fluttering synths and electronic bleeps ebb and flow amongst a crisp, tight drum groove.

Info: Who would have thought... After 16 years since he started his career as a DJ, Gonçalo aka Terzi is now taking his first steps into production! With an easy smile and contagious good humor, his love for House is well known by everyone. Hence, it is more than natural that, when he finally decides to sit down in the studio with Diogo to produce, the result is exactly that: House. “Podia Ser Melhor” (PT for “it could be better”) is an EP that does justice to Gonçalo’s personality: honest, direct, sunny music with hints of naive genius, which come out as naturally and spontaneously as he grabs the mic to sing.

The first track “Estamos Na Pista” is an immediate hit. Classic house with nervous snares, tied to a heavy kick and bass, with a laid back vocal, reminiscent of some Portuguese pop hits from the 90s, and reflecting the most prosaic of passions on the dance floor (Dr. Sax or Bamboo Beat, “rings a bell”?).

The second track, “Bem Disposto” starts at a faster pace and immediately tests Gonçalo’s Hip Hop skills. Those who know him know that he missed out on a glorious career in the genre. If “Fetra” had discovered these skills early on, we would certainly have seen a feat with Iguanas by now... Catchy and rhythmic hooks and simple themes, taken from the banality of everyday life, reflect the positivity and lightness with which he faces each day... All this before the switch that happens by the middle of the track, and which quickly transforms it into some acid madness, driven by a “sampled” break and with some rave stabs in the mix.

A light and sunny EP, with a celebratory tone, ready to bring countless embarrassed smiles to the dance floor, from those who have found themselves in these situations a thousand times. Could it be better? It could. But it certainly wouldn't be half as fun!
