Ellis Boyd ‘Red’ Redding, played by actor Morgan Freeman in the movie “Shawshank Redemption,” is given the chance to speak to the parole board for a final time. He is supposed to be giving a life sentence, but by using rhetorical elements in his speech to the parole board, he is released after 40 years.

The recording of Delong's performance of his new song "Answer" with rising soprano Alison Lau in the opening concert of TNNM concert serious in Jordan Hall. 

Program notes:

I composed this song in Berlin as a required work for Dr. Samuel Adler’s master class in June.  The song had its premier in the New Synagogue Concert Hall in Berlin and received favorable praise.  Dr. Adler described it as “a great work”.  The lyric of the song comes from Bei Dao’s poetry, “Answer”.  After the disastrous Cultural Revolution, Chinese people fell into deep grief for their miserable past decade.  People’s belief was shaken, but most of them were afraid to blame and doubt the painful past because of the tremendous harm that they experienced.  In 1976, Bei Dao, a Beijing native poet, wrote his most popular poem “Answer” to question the absurd decade and express his deepest rage and sorrow to the outside world.  This work became popular soon and essentially started the development of Chinese modern poetry.  I was significantly touched by the poem, and I decided to use music to depict the enormous emotions in it.  It is my honor to score music for his words.

A new conjunction and glimmering stars

They are the pictographs from five thousand years.

They are the watchful eyes of future generations.
