Baraka has always been synonymous with "lucky star". And it is true that you can find some of that in this duo. In 2020, as the world prepared to go into lockdown, Cristofeu (DJ and producer) and sa+ga (DJ, singer, poet, author) got together to compose a series of tracks featuring poetic vocals, acid sounds and synthetic layers. You can feel the influence of trance, trip-hop, drum'n'bass and artists such as Prodigy, Massive Attack, and even Björk. But it is on stage that Baraka's music really comes into its own. Capable of transforming a concert hall into a dancefloor or building up a club’s energy to the level of a punk show, the duo electrifies every venue they play at: from the Berghain/Panorama Bar (Berlin) to the Trabendo (Paris), from Positive Education festival (Saint-Étienne) to Boiler Room. At this rate, the duo's lucky star is unlikely to fade away any time soon.

London outfit Kassian continue their broadly-evolving yet highly detailed journey through and beyond sound towards something ever more expansive. Their second release for !K7 Records comes in the wake of creating a dedicated hardware-forward studio in a Northeast London container complex, where they have the freedom to interlink their machines. This renewed focus brought them to Supercontinent EP, named for the ancient geological era when Africa and South America were joined as Pangea.

A reformulation of rhythmic ideas inspired by South African Amapiano and South American Baile Funk governs the two hemispheres of the record. The pair examine and deconstruct dancefloor material, eschewing 4/4 for interlocking shaker patterns, searing acid lines, cracking breakbeats, and vocal samples in Zulu and Brazil Portuguese.

The immediacy of the restless rhythm and bass-led funk of “Yena” forms a sweet spot where double-time and half-time can coexist. The word Yena translates to ‘he / him / man’, and the punchy male vocal loop punctuates the track’s deep swing, enhanced by amapiano log drums sped-up to a glassy pitch.

“Yami” (‘mine’ in Zulu) is a slinkier proposition which sheds prominent percussion in favour of a weighty, fluid, acid-informed bassline undulating from below. Contrasted against its jutting female vocals and sharp synth pads, the track cultivates dancefloor anticipation, accented by skittering percussion and time-stretched acid disintegration.

An ascending percussive riff marks the arrival of “Pulgueiro Baile”, followed closely by break beats and the nostalgia of distinctly British acid electro. While pulguero translates as ‘flea market’ there is nothing random to be found; it is an intentionally future-forward retelling of a vintage sound, replete with a mind-melt breakdown of rave pads.

A dubbed-out groove dominates the bottom-heavy “Sistema Baile”, established by a leading Roland System 1 synth line. It is a groovy, steady roller that chugs and propels and chugs with head-nod hypnotism through an intricately minimalistic approach.

Otto Taimela (interestingly, when written in French as "t’aime là," it means "Otto loves you there") is a part of the new wave of quietly innovative contemporary Finnish artists. His releases, spanning from local Finnish labels like Ultraääni Records to international platforms such as Reflections by Anjunadeep, showcase a broad spectrum from contemporary neo-classical to dubby experimental minimal techno and lofi house.

“Sunflower Seeds”, his debut release on Cold Blow, captures the essence of spring's rebirth, the return of warmth, and the energizing effect of sunlight designed to thaw the winter chill from the listener's soul. The premiere track “Sunshine: Reloading”' features a blend of ambient-breakbeat music with a nuanced experimental mix of colors and textures, delivering a melody that's both spacious and vaguely hazy. Moreover, Otto's own delicate piano playing adds a deeply personal touch to the track.

The EP is also the start of a trilogy from Otto Taimela, with the next releases planned for SWIMS, the experimental sister imprint of Cold Blow.

In March this year COD3 QR delivered a digital threesome from DJ Deep, Avision and Deetron.  Now, twice as much is coming in June for the label's first vinyl-only release, with each artist bringing a second track to the platter.  As usual the tracks have been selected by Laurent Garnier for the label whose ethos is: Music diversity is our strength!

Fortunate to grow up around the rich club culture of NYC and influenced by the sounds around him, Avision started young on the turntables at the age of 12, gained his first residency at 15, and hasn't looked back since.  Around that time, he also began to hone his production skills and developed a distinctly New York-flavoured techno and house sound which is evident on "Hold No Groove" and "Talk Is Cheap".  It's the recognisable sound he's previously brought to the likes of Cocoon, Ellum, Drumcode and Hardgroove.  

Having been involved with making and playing music for over 20 years, Deetron is an artist who is assured in his ambitions and a skilled performer, maintaining a high level of quality in every aspect of his career: from mind-boggling three-deck DJ sets to his special touch on remixes or his diverse range of productions.  In 2014 he launched his own imprint, Character.  But has also graced the likes of Axis, Music Man, Subject Detroit, Running Back, Rekids and more.  Here he brings the original techno sound of "Pulse", alongside the deeper "Corazon".

DJ Deep got the party started on the digital version with "What's Going On".  It's now accompanied by the hypnotic "Transition".  So, it's no surprise to hear he started playing at clubs and raves in Paris in the late '80s / early '90s, including Laurent's renowned Wake Up at Rex.  The respected and versatile DJ, producer, label-boss and party curator is just at home helming the decks at major venues as well as mixing radio shows for Gilles Peterson's Worldwide FM.  As a producer his critically acclaimed appearances on Rekids, Kaoz Theory and Tresor, not to mention his own Deeply Rooted, have demonstrated his imaginative approach to house and techno.

B1) DJ Deep - What's Going On  - Preview

The latest pair of technical fizzers come bowling up to PM+ from the boss himself, shoulder-barging his way between business lunches with a shark-like instinct for what bangs and no quarter given for self-serious techno posturing. 

Fed into the party mainframe directly from the new Aasthma studio he shares with Pär Grindvik in Stockholm, Peder Mannerfelt applies his amped-up digits to exactly the kind of irreverent but brilliantly realised club monster PM+ was built for (with a little help from Grindvik, no less). 

‘Flash My Flip Phone’ hinges on the titular keypad tones as a sort of early 00s update on bleep techno with added doof. As a complementary serving, the ‘Flipped Groove Version’ notches up the steely, loopy mechanics of the track as an ode to kind of techno which moved mountains around the time most folk were flashing their flip phones. It’s a direct adjustment for a more visceral experience, but rest assured both cuts will slay as they order you to make way for the power play, elbows aloft, eyes on the prize.
