When Apollo mocked Eros, the god of love, as a bad shot, he took revenge by firing a love arrow with a golden tip at him and one with a leaden tip at Daphne. Apollo fell madly in love with Daphne, while she, struck by an arrow from Eros with the exact opposite effect, became insensitive to this love. When Apollo tried to rape Daphne, she fled. Exhausted by Apollo's pursuit, she begged her father Peneios to change her form, which was so charming to Apollo. As a result, her limbs froze and she turned into a laurel tree. The laurel has been sacred to Apollo ever since. In memory of Daphne, he wore a laurel wreath or a cithara adorned with laurel.
