This song opens up the questions we all ask ourselves about our relationships and our investment in them, for better or worse. All with a laidback laissez faire style that you can’t help but jive with.

Natural Consequences delivers a nuanced story about American life. Lyrically, the song is a slow and measured response to the quiet chaos that we all see in our communities, the kind that never makes the news but represents life in America right now. With a mellow R&B vibe and killer hook, Natural Consequences highlights Matt Steidle’s vocal range and musicianship.

After the signature kickoff line, the song dives deeper with lines like “Melatonin in the wonder bread, singing songs only in our heads…”, and  “Washed down to the earth, amen. Crawled out of the mud again.Can you heal, these broken bones?”. Broomwater continues to push listeners to ask more questions than they get answers, and to confront what may be slipping through all of our fingers.


Natural Consequences

Space is a super funky take on a classic conundrum we have all faced in life; the unseen ‘space’ that can develop between a couple over time. Starting with the line “I been walking along, I been thinkin’ of you. Everyday at dawn, the sun shines on you…”, the song takes the listener on a journey into a man’s mind as he contemplates his Love, and whether it's good to stick it out or time to wave goodbye.

Musically, the tune comes with Stylie’s unique drum mixing, not to mention a ripping bridge that includes some Stylie lead guitar manna-from-heaven as well.  As the song builds to peak, it lays out a jammy vibe, but pulls it back home with the constant refrain “Baby the space, between me and you!”. Will he stay or will he wave goodbye? Will he beg or drive away? No spoilers! and yes, headphones are required to get the full effect of this son, sorry not sorry.

This release features a growing collaboration between Stylie, the man behind the music for That’s The Breaks, and Broomwatr, a newcomer to the Columbus music scene who elects to stay anonymous. Together, they want to make music that matters and changes lives.

Space

While Natural Consequences delivered a slow and measured response to the quiet chaos that we all see in our communities in America, Coriolis Effect comes in hot and stays smokin’, kicking off another Broomwatr mystery tale “Always bringin’ me back, always pushing the curve, blindin’ the lion, fightin’ with the dogs, stitchin’ the cryin’ ”, the song tenders a new take on what it means to experience the world as a human in the 21st century. Like the natural occurence it's named for, Coriolis Effect hones in on the forces inside us move and shape our lives.

That’s The Breaks releases Ghosts in Cbus collaboration

In a growing effort to collaborate with regional musical talents, Matt “Stylie'' Steidle and That’s the Breaks recently announced Ghosts, a new single off of an upcoming EP to be fully released this summer in homage to Columbus’ great NPR music station, WCBE 90.5 FM. To make the song as tight as possible, Matt worked with Rob White on bass and Tom Washenko on brass horns, both known throughout the city for their work with The Deeptones, to really dig into the groove.

“In my mind, I’ve always had this vision of bringing the best of the best in the area together to play and make music. Rob and Tom both represent some of the great talents in the city, and I’m honored they welcomed the collaboration.”

Ghosts gives us a quick glimpse into a steed to breathe.”. As the song progresses, the chorus pulls us back to the salient point - “Don’t turn your back now baby, on your ghosts!”. It’s both an affirmation of love and a warning to all to ‘keep an eye on your ghosts’.

With that funkalicious bass, punctuated horn melodies, and the signature Stylie breakbeat feel and axe grinding, Ghosts delivers a punch. A surprisingly upbeat tune that makes you want to get up and groove for sure!

Matt “Stylie'' Steidle and That’s the Breaks recently announced No Questions, a new single off of an upcoming LP launching later this year. The song tackles the idea of getting help from those we love the most, and the unconditional support we all need once in a while. 

Right from the start the tune gets your head bobbin’ and hits you with the refrain ‘You brought me back. No questions asked.’ Showing range plus a little mustard, this song is a deeper reflection than just surface level love, for sure, and one that takes a little time to build.

As the song progresses, it finds a tangent in the bridge, and with an assist from lyricist Broomwatr, driving the premise of the song to new heights, with lines such as ‘I just want you to see me, and know its enough’, and peaking with ‘Ah lay me down all slow,no therapy for your demons!’. 

This release continues a growing collaboration between Stylie and Broomwater. Together, they want to make music that tells stories and changes lives.

No Questions

In classic Stylie fashion, the beat hits hard right from the top, fusing into funko-rock ear candy, driven by mystery melodies with disturbing mumbling synthed-out backing vocals. That’s just the first verse, seriously!

The beat hits harder and the flow morphs, as the song winds its confused path through a key change, lyrics start to pop up out from Stylie and Broomwatr (on lyrical assist). “All your life you’ve been a fighter, tried so hard, and sacrificed” and “All this time, sitting right next to me, starin’ at the walls, somehow some-why, you needed me, I didn’t breathe it”. All the while the listener hears a cacophonic backdrop of days-gone-past choral wonder, as Stylie soulfully croons through a bridge and closes the tune out as it starts, with 4 hard hits and a cry about the nature of the beast in all of us
