‘Word of Mouth’ is the October released debut album from the tireless Leftroom Records boss and producer/DJ, Matt Tolfrey.

Featuring a rich selection of talent, from the relatively new such as James Teej, Jem Cooke and Kevin Knapp, to legends like Marshall Jefferson and Ya Kid K, ‘Word Of Mouth’ is a return to the feel  of classic house albums of old where collaborations with vocalists, engineers and mix engineers were worn as a badge of honour.

Matt Tolfrey is a fixture of modern house music that can feel a definite sense of pride over his achievements. Once a young upstart who was championed by DJs as diverse as Craig Richards and Pete Tong, he’s now a mentor to many via his various Leftroom imprints while still retaining the 
obsessive and energetic enthusiasm for music and it’s machinations.

A recording artist who has released on Cocoon, Rekids, Crosstown Rebels, Saved, Culprit and more, Tolfrey’s touch in the studio is undoubted but with ‘Word of Mouth’ we’re treated to a unique insight into his influences, working methods and what makes him tick. 'I cannot play the piano and I am not professionally trained in any way musically, but through years 
of DJing I know exactly what I like, and I have great tracks in my head that need to get out. While searching the Internet for alternate ideas of making music, I came across some amazing software that enables you to simply sing or hum into a mic, which then translates into midi notes, which you then use as the basis of your tracks. In essence, it means that while I am walking the streets, or away travelling, and I come up with an idea for a bassline, or a melody, I can simply record it into my 
phone, return home, and sing it into the computer. In other words, ‘in theory’ the album is mainly going to be written with my mouth, not my fingers, and then fully realised with the help of engineers and guest vocalists - hence the name ‘Word Of Mouth’.

From opening cut ‘Encarta’, it’s obvious that ‘Word of Mouth’ is Tolfrey wearing his influences proudly. Any fans of 1990s deep house can feel the soul of classic British deep house imprints like Paper and DIY Discs (the latter notable as a heavy presence in Tolfrey’s beloved Nottingham during  his University years), albeit with subtle and respectful modern twists.

Dubbed in places (‘The Truth’ with Marshall Jefferson), electronic in some (‘Never Assume’ with  James Teej) and direct in others (‘The Spooks’ with Kevin Knapp packs a real, penultimate-trackpunch),  ‘Word Of Mouth’s continuing theme is elegantly employed melodies regardless of tone. A 
listen that drags you through from opener to the sublime, broken closer (‘Not So Little’ feat Kevin  Knapp), ‘Word of Mouth’ is a mature, masterful debut from a cherished UK talent.

The next release on Marcin Czubala's Your Mama's Friend showcases little known talent Selvy. The producer turns in three original cuts of lush and musical house complete with a remix from house legend Brothers’ Vibe. 

‘The Journey’ starts with blissful and beautiful ambient tones and a gentle percussive sprinkle before swelling into a ravey house cut with raw piano stabs and lively beats propping the whole thing up. Its joyous, sunshine loving and summery house that will light up any terrace party in fine style. 

Next, ‘Keep It Comin’ is a more firmly rooted house number with a propulsive boom-bap drum and clap combo driving things along. A classic house diva style vocal is placed front and centre of the track whilst the shuffling, garage-like bottom end brings plenty of energy to the track. Golden chords get draped over it at the mid-point and once again this is an easy to love hands-in-the-air track from Selvy. 

The same track gets remixed by Freerange and Jersey Underground producer Tony Rodriguez aka Brothers Vibe. His version is deeper and more stripped back with dubby chords melting off to the horizon and skeletal percussion skimming over the top of a tight, insistent and rubbery bassline. 

Finally, ‘Brother’ is a go-slow end of the night jam with glistening, reflective synths rippling all over its surface and a spoken word vocal musing on race and revolution. This track, along with the others, proves Selvy to be someone who doesn’t rush tings and someone who really knows how to lay down some fine and emotive melodies, A great EP from Your Mama’s Friends once again, then.

Having produced countless label favourites over recent years, Matt Lange makes a much-anticipated return to Anjunadeep with the double a-side outing of "Way You Know" (feat. Tania Zygar) and "Only You".

Featuring on James Grant's "Anjunadeep 05" mix, the dark and dreamy "Way You Know" blends a deep, drum & bass-influenced approach to sub bass with complex, washing melodies and Tania Zygar's haunting, ethereal vocals. Gradually unfurling to a hypnotic climax with striking pianos, "Way You Know" is another complex gem from the Berklee graduate.

Initially beginning in a more reflective mood with melancholic pianos and organic breakbeats, "Only You" quickly ups the tempo with a chugging tech groove. Again playing heavily on emotion, atmosphere and sonic detailing, "Only You" was a standout track on Jody Wisternoff's "Anjunadeep 05" mix - making Matt one of only two artists to feature original productions on both mixes of the #1 iTunes Dance compilation.

New Watergate resident Matthias Meyer was recently added to our booking agency - his debut on Watergate Records is called "Becuz" and hereby it immediately answers every potential question.

The eponymous Track has the atmospheric density of an approaching storm front that discharges into epic organ- hooks and shredded vocals. Appropriate to that the B-side begins with "November Rain", a beat-driven techno- anthem with foggy synth-spheres and "closed eyes"-attitude. Mario Basanovs a.k.a. Ten Walls' interpretation has more contours and a percussive touch that keeps the mood of the original unchanged: November rain in a tropical rainforest. An astonishing EP with two great tracks and a wonderful remix. "Becuz" EP will be released on May 12th on vinyl and digital.

Intro 

Bergerac releases are few and far between. Just 3 singles and one album since September 2010, all self penned by label boss Red Rack’em. He’s pushed his hybrid sound of woozy deep house and arid bass driven garage techno into the hearts and minds of the scenes elite including Four Tet, Mike Huckaby, MCDE, Magda, Move D and Axel Boman.

The 4th release introduces a new artist and sound to Bergerac, Seetheroad is a mysterious outsider with an impeccable techno pedigree. Words are kind of useless when quality of this depth is on offer. But here goes. After years of honing his production skills, Seetheroad is ready to smash the fuck out of things with some serious heat. He synthesises most of his music from scratch. His music has already has behind the scenes props from the likes of Claude Young, Terrence Dixon and Kyle Hall. With a production aesthetic to die for, Bergerac is proud to be releasing Seetheroads debut vinyl EP.

As ever the label artwork features bespoke illustrations from German artist Silke Eiselt of significant buildings in Seetheoads life in chronological order. Side A is his parents house and Side B is the house on Cedar Road where he honed his skills.

The A side Starpatch is a rolling funky grinder. The grey machine funk evolves into a tense peak time jaw clencher as Mujahidin bongos rise out of the track and then slip back down into the abyss. Built for Berlin and already being caned by key players all over the place.

B1 Business End is what Photek could still be making if he hadn’t discovered Dubstep. Garage tinged drums mix with a Buddhist temple gong bassline in an effortlessly funky workout. Is it techno? Who cares. It’s hot.

The EP closes with The Miserablist. A total smasher. dedicated to a certain Detroit pioneer and yet another facet to Seetheroads take on techno. Epic end of the film vibes right here….
