In my opinion, En Vogue is rivaled but unmatched in terms of vocal prowess from 90s R&B groups. Although they had a relatively short time in the mainstream spotlight, they certainly left an imprint. I've always been partial to this song from their second album 'Funky Divas'. In its original form, it's mid-tempo R&B. Here, I punched it up to something dancey. Anyone who knows me knows that I have an undying appreciation for Alanis Morissette. As a teen in the early 90s in Canada, we got to know her as a dance pop singer before she segued into rock music. 'Walk Away' is one of my favourite songs from her debut album, aptly titled 'Alanis'. I had previously made a remix of this song using a Naughty By Nature sample from 'Uptown Anthem'. I listened to it a few days ago and, frankly, it was trash LOL. So I remade it into something I like much more. The vocal is pretty artifacted but I tried to clean it up as best I could. It was only when reading up on them a day ago, after I'd already started making this mix, that I learned the vocalist they're most closely associated with, Zemya Hamilton, had passed away in 2015. The titling of this song alternates between 'Crescent Moon' and 'Beneath this Crescent Moon'. I've opted for the latter as I pulled the vocal from the ballad version of this song as, on his album 'The Way You Love Me', this is how its named. The slower, latin-infused, style is stunning. As that, Marc Evans has crafted one of the most beautiful songs that I've ever heard. While I wanted to create a house mix of it, I tried to retain some of the emotion through the strings and synth.
