I’ve always been amazed at the tremendous impact the sounds from Jamaica have had on virtually all modern music. Hip hop, punk, dance, electronic and everything in between can trace their roots to ska, rock steady and reggae.  The sounds, the production techniques, the culture; this tiny island’s reach has been incredible.  On the flip side, early Jamaican ska music drew heavily on the sounds of American rhythm & blues and jazz. As the decades past all of these genres matured in their own way and often intersected each other again as musicians around the world put their own spin on these styles. 

This mix features selections that all live in this circle of influence.  None quite fitting perfectly into one genre, decade or  nationality, but rather an amalgamation of many things.  Modern takes on 60s rocksteady, disco edits of R&B classics, and rootsy tunes from halfway around the world. This ones all about keeping things slow and groovy.
