Observatory 045 - Sungate [with Steffi & Moy Santana]

In recent years, the term "deep" has been used and reused, to the point where the word has almost no concrete meaning in the context of electronic music. That's why artists like Efdemin (a.k.a. Phillip Sollmann) are so important; there's little question that his work is "deep," but in Sollmann's case, the descriptor has a lot more to do with the actual depth and nuanced nature of his music than it does any specific sonic signifiers. He's long been associated with Dial Records, an imprint with a long history of thoughtful, detail-oriented house and techno. On March 31, the label will be delivering Decay, Efdemin's third full-length and an effort that was largely recorded in the serene environs of Kyoto, Japan. Ahead of its release, we've enlisted the veteran German producer to put together an exclusive mix for the XLR8R podcast series.

For those familiar with Efdemin, the podcast will contain little in the way of surprises, though that does nothing to detract from its quality. Throughout his career, he's repeatedly hit paydirt when enriching standard techno rhythms with bits of noise and field recordings, and that holds true here. Even when the music's energy is peaking, the podcast feels like a long, slow burn, as subtle atmospheres and melodies gently give rise to thundering layers of percussion. The blends are long and the narrative is deliberate, making for a particularly immersive listen. Sure, there are ace bits of house and techno at work, not mention more pensive melodic passages that provide a little time for introspection, but this is an effort in which the final product is truly greater than the sum of its parts.

Ecstatic is proud to welcome new signing Mattheis to the label. Having already gained many fans for his work on the Clone affiliated Nous'Klaer label, Mattheis now graduates to his first full length, entitled 'Luminous Frames’. 

Expanding on the promise of his earlier work, his hallucinogenic arpeggio explorations call to mind the synth driven kosmiche sounds of late 70s and early 80s Germany, this Klaus Schulze, Cluster, Harald Grosskopf and Manuel Gottsching as well as contemporaries James Holden and Steve Moore. ‘Luminous Frames’  takes the listener on an ethereal drift through five masterfully constructed soundscapes of billowing synth drones and enveloping sequences.

Like his name suggests, Black Merlin is something of a wizard. His music is drenched in worldly sounds and colourful cultures, not least his forthcoming Kosua album, a second on Island of The Gods. Inspired by his love affair with the island of Papua New Guinea, it features recordings of the local tribes, jungle sounds, wildlife and ancient dance customs so is a living and breathing document that immediately transports you to the southwestern Pacific. It comes after years of dizzyingly diverse releases on the likes of Pinkman, Mannequin and She Lost Kontrol that mix up EBM, techno, ambient and house, plus collaborative projects such as Karamka and Spectral Empire. 

His 90 minute mix for us is as stylish and unrestricted as you would expect, and given that we’re in Halloween month, it feels like it’s come just at the right time. Starting out with soot black apoca-disco, it traverses its way through study industrial, urban desolation and factory floors in meltdown. It’s mechanical and shadowy, but always filled with a sense of tension and suspense that keeps you enthralled.
